He is characterized as laid-back and cool-headed, but he can quickly become enraged, especially when it comes to Haruaki's antics. Sano is described as a sadist because he seems to take little pleasure in the suffering of others. This may be due to the fact that he is yakubugami, a god who brings misfortune to those around him. In fact, he doesn't really like doing something, and he will tell others directly if he doesn't want to do something. However, one of the exceptions to this relationship may be when his best friend Mamekichi wants something; then Sano becomes willing to do things that he would not otherwise do, even if he is not interested in what Mame wants from him. Despite this attitude, it was noticed that he cares a lot about his friends and even has a soft spot for Haruaki.

He can use yakubugami's powers to bring misfortune upon a person. He doesn't control these forces very well, and more often than not it ends up with him blowing people's clothes off and leaving them wearing only underwear. He also managed to get the dog to break free from its owner's arms and chase Haruaki in the second volume, and in chapter 46, he unleashed a thunderstorm on his classmates on the beach for destroying the tanuki sand sculpture that he and Meimi were building.
