Hwang In-ho (황인호) is Hwang Jun-ho's older brother. He was one of the winners and a previous winner of the game. He is the man who takes on the role of "The Leader" (프론트맨). At first he is seen only as a person wearing a black mask and hood. He is the one who takes full control of the progress of the squid game at the request of the real man who runs the game, also taking charge of directing the soldiers, and within the soldiers, he is called "Leader".

Before becoming the leader who controls the Squid Games, Hwang In-ho was a police officer in South Korea, just like his younger brother, Hwang Jun-ho. However, his life took a tragic turn when his wife, diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, needed an urgent liver transplant. His financial situation was not enough to cover the expensive medical treatments, and in his desperation, he began accepting bribes from those who offered money in exchange for favors. This act of corruption not only cost him his career, but also dragged him into a spiral of debt and despair as his beloved's health worsened. What could have been an act of desperation to save the life of his loved one turned into a fall from grace, as when his superiors discovered his involvement in bribery, they fired him and turned him into a man with no future, no options, and no money. In his dialogue with Gi-hun in the second season, it is revealed that his beloved wife was not only sick, but also pregnant at the time of her death, adding an even more tragic layer to his story. This situation is key to understanding the coldness with which he becomes the leader of the game: pain and loss pushed him to a dark place, where moral rules and justice no longer had the same value.

In-ho wasn’t always the leader of the competition. In fact, he participated in the 28th Squid Games as Player 132 in 2015. During that edition, like many other contestants, he found himself in a situation of dire financial need, similar to that of Gi-hun, the protagonist of the series. The money promised by the games offered him a way out, but in his case, even winning did not mean achieving happiness or redemption. Instead of escaping with his prize, he decided to take a completely different route. After winning the games, he was not satisfied with just the money. Unlike the other winners, who seek a life of luxury, he reached out to Oh Il-nam, the creator of it all, who was on the verge of death from a brain tumor. At this point, In-ho is drawn not only by the wealth that the games can offer, but by a purpose, by a way to regain control over his life. He decided to join him, and in doing so, he became a supervisor, taking on a leadership role rather than basking in his victory. This turn in his life shows how money was not the only thing that motivated In-ho; his need for power and control over his destiny was stronger than any prize. Or perhaps to find a new purpose for his life, now that he has no wife and cannot resume his career as a police officer.

In Season 2, when In-ho takes on the role of Player 001, his true identity remains a mystery to the other contestants, though viewers are already familiar with his role as the Leader. This allows him to stay several steps ahead, manipulating events from the shadows.
