Kento Nanami (AsiAsi 海建YoYoYo, Nanami Kento?) is a major supporting character in Jujutsu Kaisen. He was a former student of Tokyo Jujutsu High, where he was an upperclassman of Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. Nanami initially left Jujutsu High after graduating to become a salaryman, but returned four years later to continue working as a jujutsu sorcerer. While working as Jujutsu High's sorcerer, Nanami held the top spot and operated primarily out of the Tokyo campus. With the arrival of Satoru, he also became a close mentor to Yuji Itadori.

Appearance

Nanami is a tall, well-built man with blond hair parted in the middle. Nanami has very thin eyebrows and small hazel eyes that are usually covered by his trademark sunglasses, which have no temples surrounding his ears. As befitting a former office worker, Nanami is usually fully dressed in a formal business suit. His usual outfit consists of a blue dress shirt underneath a brown blazer with matching pants and light shoes. Attached to his dress shirt is a sheath that sheathes Nanami's blunt sword, hidden by the back of his blazer. He also sports a tie that shares the same dot pattern as the bandages around his blunt sword. After graduating from Jujutsu High and working for a corporation, Nanami wore a vertically striped jacket over a white button-down shirt and a dark-colored tie with white polka dots all over it, vertically striped pants, and black shoes. As a student, Nanami wore a normal Jujutsu High uniform. Her hair was styled slightly differently when she was younger.

Personality

Nanami is a very wise and reserved man, often appearing so calm and indifferent that he comes across as stoic and aloof. He seems like the type of person who takes his job too seriously, but Nanami knows how to separate sentimentality from service. He is frank and direct in most conversations and does not mind impractical optimism[3] or questions that are left open to interpretation. In addition, Nanami is very eager and quick to express his irritation, either on his face or verbally with his words. Nanami is often very impatient. He hates working overtime and is very serious about not going even a minute over what is required of him. Beneath his tough exterior, Nanami is actually quite sociable and doesn't mind intelligent conversation. He is practical and overly serious, to an almost comical point at times as well. He claims that he only became a jujutsu sorcerer because it's a little less of a jerk than being a salaryman. Playing the role of one of Yuji's mentors, Nanami is a great contrast to Satoru, who is much more outspoken and calm. Yuji and Satoru describe Nanami as "gloomy" and the former didn't believe that they would get along at first. Nanami is a normal man burdened by the everyday routines of life that robbed him of his youth. Nanami doesn't believe that age or life-threatening experiences propel one into adulthood. Instead, he feels that it is the accumulation of all the small inconveniences throughout life that transform people into adults. He initially treated Yuji as a child because he did not want to see him abandon his youth for the sake of being a jujutsu sorcerer. However, Yuji eventually proved his worth and forced Nanami to acknowledge him. Nanami knows that being a jujutsu sorcerer is a dangerous and demanding job for the insane, so it is difficult for her to respect people in the profession. Although Nanami and Satoru have been friends for a long time, the former claims that he does not respect Satoru despite their mutual trust in each other. [11] He returned to being a sorcerer after the salaryman life because he never truly felt appreciated and did not believe that his work had a significant impact on anyone. On the contrary, working as a sorcerer allowed him to accumulate small tokens of appreciation from innocent people. For Nanami, this was more than enough to allow her to live without regrets. [12] Nanami had a similar, though naturally less mature, personality while a student at Jujutsu High. He viewed missions as a burden, but his negativity was always offset by the extreme optimism of his classmate Yu Haibara. [13] Haibara's death affected Nanami greatly, and likely played a role in his initial decision to leave life as a jujutsu sorcerer behind. One of the reasons he believes jujutsu sorcerers are trash is because they must force their peers to accept that they must willingly sacrifice themselves. He acknowledges that this led him to "run away" from the profession, admitting that it is a more appropriate phrase than suggesting he "give up". Nanami wants to believe that he has never been frustrated by his own worthlessness, but many of his failures haunt him, such as allowing Haibara to die.

General ability

Overall Skill Level: Nanami is a model example of what a Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer should be. Yuji and Takuma Ino admire Nanami for her demeanor when actively facing a difficult situation, as well as her incredible skill when it comes to resolving it. Satoru Gojo also entrusted Nanami with taking care of Yuji due to these traits,[16] and it paid off well for Yuji's growth.[17] A powerful Grade 2 sorcerer, Ino approaches every difficult decision with "what would Nanami do" in mind because she believes that Nanami always handles things the right way. In regards to combat ability, Nanami is capable of fighting on par with Special Grade Cursed Spirits such as Mahito. While Mahito was still in the infancy of his existence, Nanami was able to keep up in several of the exchanges. With the lack of information regarding Mahito's ability, Nanami suffered a direct blow to his soul, but was still able to survive, something no one Mahito faced before had been able to do. Mahito himself considered Nanami to be exceptionally strong and a worthy opponent, far stronger than the average sorcerer. [19] During the Shibuya Incident, Nanami demonstrated her leadership ability alongside great intellect and fighting strength. Upon learning of Satoru's sealing, Nanami was able to deduce what the best move for her team would be and helped carry out the Mechamaru rescue plan without delay. Understanding that Kiyotaka Ijichi and the managers are crucial for communication on a large-scale mission, Nanami went alone to establish protocols for the operation while also delegating the others to another task. After finding an injured Ijichi, Nanami was able to quickly track down the culprit, Haruta Shigemo, and beat the curse user unconscious without sustaining so much as a scratch. Physical prowess: Swordsman: Melee: Durability

Master Swordsman: Nanami primarily utilizes a blunt sword in battle and does so with incredible skill. Combined with her Cursed Technique, Nanami can cut through anything, including an opponent who is blocking and using cursed energy to defend themselves. Nanami handles her sword with grace and poise, striking with extreme speed and precision with each swing of her sword. Master of Hand-to-Hand Combat: In addition to being skilled in armed combat, Nanami is also an extremely capable unarmed fighter. His innate technique works with both his fists and his blunt sword. Nanami used this method to effortlessly overpower the Haruta Curse user Shigemo. Each of Nanami's blows were incredibly devastating, a simple backhand was enough to send Shigemo flying across the room. There was never a point in the fight where Nanami was a danger fighting at close range, he landed one crushing blow after another and Shigemo would have died if not for his cursed technique. Enhanced Durability: Nanami is incredibly durable for a human, even by a sorcerer's standards. As mentioned above, he was able to survive contact with Mahito's Dormant Transformation and continued to fight, eventually escaping with his life and body intact. [26] When Shigemo fought Nanami, he attempted to slash and kick him right after. However, Nanami emerged unscathed from the slash and did not budge an inch from the curse user's kick. Shigemo compared hitting Nanami to a stone wall and said it felt like he wasn't even hitting a person. [27] Furthermore, Nanami was able to survive an endless swarm of man-eating fish shikigami for over a minute and was attacked by Jogo shortly after that. He was miraculously able to survive both of them and was even able to continue fighting, unlike Maki and Naobito who were completely incapacitated.

Superior Precision and Technique: Nanami is an extremely technical fighter who plans to use his every move to exploit an opening in his opponent. His aim is always extremely accurate as he never misses his target's weak point when it is exposed by his cursed technique. Against stronger opponents, Nanami fights by knocking them down and creating constant weak points until they eventually fall. This same level of precision allows Nanami to evade his opponent's attacks with clever maneuvers. For example, by stabbing his sword into a wall, Nanami was able to raise his legs just enough to avoid a ranged attack from Mahito. Great Tactical Intellect: Nanami's greatest assets in battle, aside from her Cursed Technique, are her shrewd fighting instincts and deductive reasoning skills. Both times she fought Mahito, Nanami knew she was at a disadvantage in terms of raw Cursed Energy; however, she survived both confrontations and overwhelmed Mahito on several occasions thanks to her quick thinking and masterful execution. When Nanami was assigned Mahito's case, she was able to effectively utilize her team to track down the right clues that eventually led them directly to Mahito. She was also able to recognize that Mahito was deliberately leading them to his hideout and decided to go alone to prevent harm to the others. [30] During their first encounter, Nanami finally realized that her cursed technique couldn't win against Mahito's. As a countermeasure, Nanami used the environment around them to immobilize Mahito. In their second fight, Nanami quickly realized that Yuji could deliver attacks that would actually damage Mahito. Instantly, Nanami came up with a strategy to overwhelm Mahito together that completely worked, and if it wasn't for Mahito's sudden evolution, she would have killed the special-grade cursed spirit.

Cursed Energy: Black Flash

Cursed Energy Manipulation: Nanami has remarkable control over his cursed energy, demonstrated by his ability to assign a binding vow to himself and limit its use for a set amount of time. Against Mahito's Idle Transfiguration, Nanami subconsciously shielded his soul with cursed energy in order to survive the initial impact of his opponent's innate technique. Cursed Energy Reinforcement - By reinforcing her body, Nanami became immune to a kick and a slash from Shigemo's sword. [27] Using her technique and cursed energy to enhance her strength, Nanami landed three blows on Shigemo, each blow being powerful enough to send him careening back and kill him outright, with the curse user only surviving due to her cursed technique. Black Flash (黒SiWho? Yo, Kokusen?): A phenomenon that creates a spatial distortion when a user connects a cursed energy strike within 0.000001 seconds of a physical strike, causing the cursed energy to flash black, creating a more potent attack with 2.5 of the power of a normal strike. Before Yuji fought Hanami, Nanami was the record holder for the most consecutive uses of Black Flash with four times in a row. He claims that he got lucky.

Overtime (ButTheWho? かんWellYesWellBut働Yes, Jikangairōdō? ): Nanami's signature binding oath with himself. Nanami limits the amount of cursed energy he can utilize during the time he is officially on the clock working for Jujutsu High. Once he goes beyond his normal shift and overtime begins, Nanami's cursed energy greatly increases and grants him a boost in fighting power. While working his normal hours, Nanami suppresses his cursed energy to roughly 80-90%. By invoking Overtime, Nanami exerts 110-120% of his maximum power. Nanami can actively break the oath and use 100% of his cursed energy at any time, but using Overtime in that case would only result in a 1% increase. Revealing One's Hand (YoPor favor報ElYo開SíYoEl, Jōhō no Kaiji ? ): A binding vow commonly used by many jujutsu practitioners. By divulging how her cursed technique works, Nanami can maximize the output of cursed energy in her next attack. Proportion Technique (十YoBuenoSíElSheYoPeroHe, Tōkaku Juhō ? ): Divides the target with ten lines and forcibly creates a weak point at the seven to three ratio point. The target's lines do not have to match its length or wingspan. Nanami can choose which part to divide, including the target's head, torso, arms, and legs. This technique is also applicable to non-living objects. Collapse (瓦Yo落Plus瓦Yo落Plus, Garagara?): An extension technique that creates a weak point in the surrounding environment, allowing Nanami to destroy it with a single blow. Nanami first used this technique after unleashing her two binding vows to destroy the underground tunnel and trap Mahito.

Equipment

Nanami primarily enters battle with a blunt sword wrapped in cloth with a black dot design splattered on it. The sword itself is short and has a wooden handle. The same dot design is also on Nanami's tie, which she sometimes wraps around her fists. She uses both to activate her innate technique and strike her target's weak point.
