history - part 1
He is sent to Parris Island for eight weeks of recruit training and receives his signature nickname on his first day in Platoon 3092. There he meets Cowboy and Gomer Pyle. He starts off rough with the head drill instructor but stands up to the tough routine of yelling, beatings, and intense training. In the first four weeks, he witnesses Pyle trying his best, but still failing. Like the other recruits, Joker is physically fit compared to Pyle, who struggles more and is also not very bright. The fifth week of training places Joker in a leadership position. When asked if he believes in the Virgin Mary, he denies it, as he knows it is a trick question. This infuriates the Chief Inspector and he attacks Joker. He refuses to reverse his answer, and with this he is promoted to squad leader and Pyle is assigned to Joker for individual instruction. He takes Pyle under his wing, but even as Pyle appears to be improving, the abuse continues to pile up from the DIs. Soon, the platoon begins receiving corrective training, under the guise of collective punishment, whenever Pyle continues to make a mistake. The final straw was a blanket party at the beginning of the seventh week, at midnight. Despite his misgivings, Joker hits Pyle with a bar of soap wrapped in a towel and continues to the point where his disappointment gets the better of him and turns into an unrelenting rage. In the morning, Joker notices the change in Pyle, from his improved state to his unusual silence. At first, he and the squad feel that Pyle was very focused. It soon occurs to him that Pyle is no longer mentally stable after seeing him talking to his rifle. Sadly, this is dismissed as a rumor.
history - part 2
Graduation day for Platoon 3092 arrives. Joker is awarded the Rifle Expert Badge and promoted to Private First Class. He receives training orders and is required to attend the Infantry Training Regiment and then the Basic Military Journalism School, where he will become a combat correspondent. On the final night, he is assigned to firewatch duty and finds Pyle with his rifle, talking to him and has armed it with a magazine full of live ammunition. He attempts to calm the insane Pyle, but Pyle loudly proclaims that the rifle belongs to him like a woman. The Chief Inspector attempts to intervene, but Pyle shoots him. Joker reasons with Pyle, who briefly snaps out of his psychotic obsession and realizes what he has done. Joker watches in horror as Pyle shoots himself in the mouth. Joker is assigned to the 1st Marine Division. By early 1968, he is a corporal, already less than two months into his Vietnam service. His works have been written for military magazines such as Stars and Stripes and Leatherneck. He is mates with First Corporal "Rafter Man" Compton as his combat photographer, a new boy. With his office in Phu Bai, he is on Hill 327, southwest of the city, to write an article about the Freedom Hill Recreation Center. He is in Da Nang to see John Wayne's The Green Berets at a movie theater, where he reunites with Cowboy for the first time since leaving Parris Island. At this meeting he encounters the Lusthog Squad, including Animal Mother, who sizing him up fiercely, and Crazy Earl, who seems eager for the chance to become famous. On the way to the Division Information Services Office, Rafter Man expresses his desire to go out into the field. Despite his position, Joker says that he is not responsible for his photographer's life because he is not in a leadership position.
history - part 3
The following year, Joker is transferred to Vietnam as a sergeant and now works for the Lusthog Squad. The men take part in the Battle of Hue, and at this time, the squad is interviewed by journalists and reporters about their experiences in Vietnam. Later, while on patrol, squad leader Crazy Earl is killed in a booby trap and Eightball and Doc Jay are killed by a Vietcong sniper. The sniper shoots and kills Cowboy as he radios for support; he soon dies in Joker's arms. Eventually, Joker and the squad finally find the sniper, a teenage girl, but after wounding her, the squad argues over whether or not they should kill her, with the sniper constantly begging for death. Joker insists that they cannot let her bleed out and suffer, and is told that if he wants her to stop suffering he will have to do so. He does so, and the squad congratulates him on his death while displaying a blank stare. In the end, Joker and the squad return to their camp, with his squad singing the Mickey Mouse March, and Joker stating that despite being in a "shitty world", he is happy to still be alive and that he is no longer afraid.
