He is a thin man of average size and is dressed the same as the rest of the Heart Pirates. He wears a black cap with a yellow brim, a red pompom on top, and his name appears on the front. After the timeskip, his appearance is more or less the same as before, except the red pompom on his hat has been replaced with a decoration resembling a young emperor penguin, likely as a reference to his name.[3]

Penguin lost his parents to a tsunami and was sent to an orphanage, where he met Shachi. They were both sent to live with Shachi's uncles, who treated them as slaves in an illegal business. Desperate to escape the situation, the two children fled into the forest.[5] One day, the two found a very young Bepo lost in the woods and beat him up, with Law stopping the fight with his powers upon finding them. [2] Shortly after, they had an accident while trying to hunt a wild boar in which he lost his right arm and Shachi suffered a severe stomach wound. Law and Bepo found the children and managed to save them with the help of their benefactor Wolf and Law's skills and knowledge. Afterwards, they decided to become his subordinates. [5]
