bright, friendly, cheerful demeanour, has an easygoing smile on her face regardless of the situation she is in. However, her outward behavior is shown very quickly to be a façade. This is displayed in the way she enjoys teasing others, to the point of being rather sadistic about it, enjoying most notably to pick on Giyu Tomioka. Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with demons, she can be rather cruel towards them. Her outwardly calm and tranquil disposition is worn as a mask, as Shinobu holds an intense hatred for demons due to the loss of her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, along with the deaths of her parents, almost all of her Tsuguko, and the families of her apprentices at the Butterfly Mansion. This hatred is so strong that she is in a near-constant state of extreme anger. Her desire for revenge rendered her unable to live the normal life her sister had wished upon her, instead devoting the entirety of her energy to defeating demons

Douma had killed Kanae Kocho. In order to defeat Douma, Shinobu heavily altered her body by absorbing highly concentrated wisteria-based poison over a period of a year prior to her battle with him. She is successful in saturating her body with the undetectable poison that has completely merged with her body's own cell structures, including those of her blood and internal organs—all the way down to the very tips of her fingernails. With Shinobu's overall size and weight, her body is the equivalent of 37 kilograms worth of poison, approximately 700 times more than the lethal amount needed to kill an average demon

Shinobu's Demon Slayer uniform's jacket is originally designed to leave the center of the chest area open, similar to Mitsuri Kanroji's, but, as Shinobu disliked this aspect of its design, she burned the original uniform right in front of the Kakushi who had just given it to her and requested a fully buttoned version of the uniform instead; Shinobu and Mitsuri get along quite well due to them having been the only two female Hashira after Kanae Kocho's death. Mitsuri also teaches her western cooking; Shinobu's parents worked in compounding medicine, a reason why Shinobu is also very talented with medicines; Shinobu's blade was designed and created by the chief of the Swordsmith Village, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, likely due to its unique shape requiring the chief's expertise to forge; Shinobu has a pet goldfish named Fugu; Although Shinobu wouldn't admit it, she was a natural airhead. The names she came up with for Kanao Tsuyuri were so bizarre that upon seeing them, Kanae broke down into such an "EH?!" expression that even Aoi Kanzaki wasn't able to smoothen things out; There was some tension during the cooperative research time between Shinobu and Yushiro. Shinobu's overall level of openness was ranked 85% Shinobu's younger self had a more brash, blunt and uncomplicated demeanor as seen when she and her sister rescued Kanao Tsuyuri, who she had a pointedly negative attitude towards raising. After the death of Kanae, however, Shinobu began to outwardly behave more like her sister and eventually developed her positive attitude and mannerisms to match while internally holding in her rage, which she later clarifies is fueled by her desire to continuously display the smile that her sister favored. As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a very powerful and skilled combatant. Despite not possessing the physical strength to cut off a demon's head common to that of an average Demon Slayer, Shinobu uses her creativity, ingenuity and other physical abilities to more than make up for it. Instead of the traditional method of decapitating a demon with a Nichirin Sword to kill them, Shinobu opts to use a modified version of a katana that acts as a stinger to inject a powerful wisteria-based poison that is lethal to demons. In addition to her intellect, she is extremely fast and agile, allowing her to overpower demons very quickly Indomitable Will: Shinobu possesses an undaunted spirit and incredible willpower, mostly due to her unquenchable hatred for demons. Butterfly Dance: Caprice (she leaps into the air and charges towards the opponent, stinging them multiple times with their blade to inject poison in just seemingly one strike); Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter (she dashes at their target at blinding speeds and uses the momentum of her speed to then strengthen a single thrust into their opponent and inject poison into them); Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon (A six strike attack with which the user aims to strike and inject their target with multiple doses of poison at the target's weak spots, in order to kill them with a large dose of poison); Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag (An attack with which she uses her full speed to run a zigzag pattern that confuses their opponent in order to create an opening for them to directly stab their opponent's neck and inject poison to kill them, with the stab's force and power being further enhanced by the momentum of their speed. The sheer speed of this technique is strong enough to destroy an entire wooden bridge.

Relationships

Giyu Tomioka: Giyu and Shinobu are both Hashiras of the Demon Slayer Corps with contrasting personalities. Shinobu initially thinks Giyu is a clueless airhead, especially when he seemingly zones out during a mission. However, she later expresses a desire for him to speak more. Over time, both come to care for the Kamado siblings and are upset by the other Hashiras’ harsh treatment of them. Tanjiro Kamado: Shinobu first meets Tanjiro after she attempts to kill Nezuko, and tells him it is dangerous to be so close to a Demon. Later on, during the Hashira's trial, she is the only one trying to hear Tanjiro's side of the story, and has a sad expression on her face as Tanjiro desperately tries to explain that Nezuko has not and will not hurt anybody. She comes to care about both Tanjiro and Nezuko and is visibly concerned about them, even letting them rest at her estate so they are able to recover from their injuries. Inosuke Hashibira: Inosuke meets Shinobu while recovering at the Butterfly Estate. To motivate him to continue his recovery training, Shinobu condescendingly mocks his inability to do simple things, prompting Inosuke to angrily train harder. As time passed, Inosuke saw Shinobu as a surrogate mother due to her kindness Nezuko Kamado: Shinobu initially assumes that since Nezuko was a demon she was a threat to others, though she decides to make her death swift and painless when she realizes that Tanjiro was her brother. She leaps out from afar and attempts to stab the demon girl with her sword, only to be blocked by Giyu. However, at the Hashira Meeting, she doesn't object to the master's decision to accept her into the Corp.

Kanao Tsuyuri: Shinobu impulsively bought Kanao out of slavery but grew frustrated with her inability to make decisions, considering her a danger to herself. However, they eventually developed a strong, sisterly bond. At Kanae’s funeral, Shinobu comforted Kanao, understanding her inability to cry. Shinobu chose Kanao as her Tsuguko, trusting her skills as a Demon Slayer. Although initially worried about Kanao’s true will, she was happy when Kanao expressed a desire to train with her. Shinobu deeply trusted and protected Kanao, even entrusting her with avenging Kanae’s death, and was concerned about the risks Kanao faced, such as losing her sight using the Flower Breath’s Final Form. Kanae Kocho: Shinobu shared a deep, loving bond with her older sister Kanae, having grown up happily together. They both swore to protect others from demons after surviving an attack that killed their parents. Despite Kanae’s carefree nature, Shinobu trusted and supported her decisions, including adopting Kanao. Kanae’s love for Shinobu was evident in her final moments when she urged Shinobu to live a peaceful, happy life. In return, Shinobu vowed vengeance on the demon who killed Kanae, unable to live without seeking justice for her sister. At 14 years old, Shinobu saw how Douma put a final attack that killed Kanae. Shinobu screamed from shock. Shinobu was holding Kanae on her arms begging for her to not close eyes and crying desperately. Kanae was still smiling and telling Shinobu to live a norml life like other girls, and leave the demon slyer corps Genya Shinazugawa: Although the two are never shown interacting, Genya mentions that Shinobu had examined his unique demon-consuming condition after being introduced by Gyomei. He gripes that she had given him sour looks and lectures, to which Tanjiro reassures that it's out of concern instead of disdain Douma: Shinobu holds a strong resentment and hatred for Douma, due to him killing her older sister, Kanae. She's planning to avenge him.

Gyomei: Gyomei Himejima and Shinobu Kochō first met when Shinobu and Kanae's family were attacked by demons, Gyomei, who's profession was still a Demon Slayer at the time, Gyomei, intervened just in time, saving both sisters from further harm. Despite the rest of their family, that being their parents, passing away, Shinobu and Kanae managed to survive, thanks to Gyomei's assistance. Shinobu held a massive respect for him after he saved her and her late sister's life. This sentiment is further fueled by Shinobu's reminding Gyomei of the children from his former temple.
