Persona Attributes

Luffy has unkempt black hair, round black eyes, and a lean, muscular build. His most notable feature is his trademark Straw Hat (from which he gets his nickname "Straw Hat Luffy"), which was given to him as a youth by the legendary pirate captain, Red-Haired Shanks, who in turn received it from Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. His attire is also vaguely similar to Shanks', wearing either short or long pants that are pulled up, along with sandals and a red vest or shirt. Luffy also has a two-dot scar below his left eye (he gave it to himself in Chapter 1). He was severely injured by Sakazuki in the war against Whitebeard, leaving a large X-shaped scar on his chest. At first glance Luffy appears to be thin and not very corpulent, but has a surprisingly well-built physique. Luffy typically wears the same outfit throughout most of the series, though he often changes the color of his outfits or the accessories he wears, such as his mid-arm bracelet on Amazon Lily or yellow, red, blue, or green clothing, among others. Luffy may wear a different outfit to suit an island's climate (such as a hooded jacket on Drum Island or desert robes on Alabasta), but reverts to his normal attire (vest and shorts) after his adventures on said islands are over. Although Luffy usually wears a red vest and blue pants, he wears his usual outfit in different colors: For example, in Enies Lobby he wears black pants, as they had large pockets in which he could carry Water 7's meat, in Thriller Bark he wears an orange vest and red shorts, and in Sabaody Archipelago he wears a blue vest and dark blue pants. During the assault on Impel Down Luffy is shown wearing a light blue vest and red shorts and after the fight against Magellan, Inaz

Inazuma gives him a yellow vest, which he also wears during the battle at Marineford. However, no matter where he is, he always carries his Straw Hat with him everywhere, though at first, the hat was prone to falling off his head easily, forcing Luffy to either put it aside or pass it to someone while he was fighting. He has since gotten a rope strap sewn onto it by Nami, allowing the hat to hang around his neck during fights. Luffy has also worn various ornaments such as bracelets on occasion. During the Skypiea Arc, he was seen wearing a black bracelet around his left wrist with a white bracelet underneath, and after the battle against Gecko Moria on Thriller Bark, Luffy wore a bracelet with dark decoration around his left bicep. This bracelet was later revealed to be a map leading to Captain John's lost treasure, which Buggy had been searching for some time ago, prompting Luffy to hand it over to him. This bracelet for Buggy is like a reward for his services in driving him through all the levels in Impel Down. During his return to Marineford, to give a silent prayer for the fallen, Luffy was briefly shown with four characters written on his right arm, which spelled out a 3D2Y, with the crossed out 3D meaning that he would originally be reunited with his crew in 3 days, but the other symbol indicating that it will be in 2 years (2Y) instead of the 3 days (3D) as planned after Bartholomew Kuma had them go to different parts of the world.

Two years later

After two years, Luffy wears a red, long-sleeved, 4-button jacket (bare-chested), with a yellow sash tied around the waist, reminiscent of Gol D. Roger's attire. He also appears to be a bit taller, with longer hair as well. He looks more muscular in his arms, legs, chest, and shoulders (this is especially noticeable during the Wano Country arc), aside from more pronounced facial features that indicate greater age. In the Punk Hazard Arc, Luffy is dressed in his usual attire, plus a jumpsuit-like coat that covers his entire body, keeping him completely warm. This suit has a pattern of horizontal lines and a hood at the top. He therefore wears a hood again, as he did in Drum Island. However, Luffy still wears his usual sandals, despite the cold. He also wears gloves and small ear warmers as accessories. In the Dressrosa Arc, Luffy is dressed in a black shirt with daisy prints and covered the top of his hat with black cloth; apart from that, he has the same sash and pants as at the beginning of the timeskip. At the beginning, he had to go incognito, so he wore dark sunglasses, a mustache and a white beard. During the Mera Mera no Mi tournament, he wore a gladiator helmet with horns and a feathered crest, with the name of his participation on the back. After Sabo took his place, he temporarily covered his face with his cape.

Luffy's low intelligence is inversely proportional to his bravery, meaning he is a very unintelligent person who barely knows fear.[19] These two traits are the main reason for his inability to understand danger, and contribute greatly to his complete lack of fear in most situations in his life. Even though he is of age, Luffy acts like a little kid most of the time. He is amazed by the simplest things, such as hermit crabs or shiny things, and he confuses basic concepts, being for example unable to dig two consecutive holes in the sand without filling one with dirt from the other. Like a child, he is attracted to strange things, monsters, and strange creatures; in fact, it is normal that whenever he encounters any individual who is out of the ordinary, he immediately asks them to join his crew (as happened in Thriller Bark), or in any case he asks Sanji to cook them for him. He also lacks basic cultural notions, so he does not have the slightest knowledge of medicine, carpentry, cooking or orientation; as shown by the fact that he suggested to Nami when she got sick that she stuff herself with meat to lower her fever, and later tried to do the same with Zoro after the encounter with the Warlord of the Sea Bartholomew Kuma. But despite his apparent foolishness, this naivety gives him a touch of charm. And on the other hand, if he weren't so stupid, he wouldn't be so brave either. One thing worth noting is that, despite his childish attitude, when it comes to serious combat or decisions of great importance, Luffy acts in a very mature manner, defeating opponents much stronger than him. It has already been said that he is not very intelligent, but he is clever and imaginative, being able to devise strategies that save the situation no matter how difficult it may be. As Oda once pointed out, Luffy has not read a single book.

The ability to remain still, focused on one thing and without distractions is absolutely incompatible with him. In fact, when he tries to think of a plan to escape danger and tries to use logic to find a way out, the tension turns against him and begins to affect him physically so much that he feels weak and sick (as it happened to him in Amazon Lily). If Luffy encounters something he doesn't understand, even if someone explains it to him in detail, he calls it a "mysterious thing", like how he calls Dance Powder a "Mysterious Powder". One of Luffy's running gags is that he often asks "non-humans" such as Brook, Camie, and Shyarly if they can poop, in which case the answer is usually yes. Another running gag is Luffy's slow reaction time, especially in freezing temperatures. His simple-mindedness was actually what saved him from the power of Boa Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi in a most stupid way: Luffy mistook one of her beams at him for those produced by Foxy's Noro Noro Beam (whose effect is to slow down the movements of those it affects), so when he saw Hancock trying to exert her power against him he thought it was a slowing ray; but the fear of being slowed down caused him to unconsciously slow himself down and he began trying to flee by moving at an extremely slow speed before the beam even hit him, and when he realized a few seconds later that he could move freely, it was discovered that he was immune to its powers due to his pure heart.[20]
