Arthur, who considered Dutch to be his godfather, found common ground with him and began a life of freedom away from the rule of law and the responsibilities of citizenship, becoming one of the first members of the Van der Linde gang . At some point in his youth, Arthur Morgan met a girl named Mary Gliss , and the two fell in love. However, Arthur's preference for a life of crime made Mary's family unhappy, and thus their relationship ended. Arthur later met a young waitress named Eliza, and their relationship resulted in a son named Isaac. Eliza knew what kind of person Arthur was, but she accepted any support she could offer. Arthur would visit Eliza and Isaac every few months and stay with them for a few days. One day when Arthur arrived at their house, he saw two crosses outside the house and immediately knew that they were both dead. He later learned that they had been killed by robbers for just ten dollars. This incident made Arthur even tougher because he had never endured such pain before.

Because of these desires, he turned to a life of crime. In his early days as a criminal, Dutch formed an unlikely partnership with Colm O'Driscoll , a notorious outlaw and gang leader . John was only eight years old at the time and was sent to an orphanage, where he spent his adolescence. He escaped from the orphanage and lived on the streets. At the age of eleven, he committed his first murder, shooting a man, although he claims that it was not his fault. In 1885, at the age of twelve, Marston was caught committing a robbery in Illinois and Dutch Van der Linde rescued him and took him under his wing. John joined Dutch Van der Linde's gang and became friends with other gang members, including Hosea Matthews , Arthur Morgan, and Susan Grimshaw , who became like family to him. In the same way, they robbed the rich and gave some of it to the poor. They intended to bring about a great change in the people of the West, although Marston later admitted that this was only an excuse for their robberies and plundering. In 1894, a prostitute named Abigail Roberts joined the gang. After a while, John and Abigail began a relationship, which resulted in a son named Jack.
John Marston
The gang members also became family to John's son, Jack, and all became Jack's aunts or uncles. When Jack was one year old, John left the gang for a year. After this period, he returned to be welcomed by Dutch and the rest of the gang, but Arthur Morgan considered John's action a betrayal, and over the next few years a rift developed between the two.The band continued east until they reached Blackwater , where they decided to stay for a while. They added new members to the band, including Micah Bell and Charles Smith.Myka encouraged Dutch to rob a small ship, and John, along with Xavier, the Callender brothers Mack and Davey , and Sean , participated in the robbery. They each formed their own gangs, the O'Driscoll Boys and the Van der Linde Gang . When Dutch attempted to kill Colm's brother, their friendship eventually turned into an enmity. To get revenge, Colm killed a woman named Annabelle, who was apparently Dutch's lover. After this incident, Dutch and Colm's gangs became bitter enemies. He was twice captured and sentenced to death, but on both occasions he managed to escape before losing his life.
