Story

Clifford Lee Burton was born on February 10, 1962, in the maternity ward of Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, California, USA, to Jen and Ray Burton. He had an older brother, Scott, and a sister, Connie. His father, Ray, originally from Tennessee, worked as an assistant to a highway engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ray was a hippie and passed on to his son everything that was important to him: his ideals, his attitude towards certain things. His mother, Jen, was originally from California. She taught at the Castro Valley School for Children with Disabilities. He attended Marshall Elementary School in Castro Valley. He then attended Earl Warren High School. He first became interested in music when his father introduced him to classical music. After that, Cliff began taking piano lessons at the age of 6. Young Burton became interested in rock, classical music, and heavy metal. While in high school, the boy played in the minor league baseball team, the Auto House. He read a lot with his brother and sister, and often went hunting and fishing with friends at the Maxwell Ranch. He began playing bass guitar at the age of 13 after the death of his brother Scott, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 19, 1975 (at the age of 16). Cliff experienced this event quite hard. According to his parents, Cliff said: "I will become the best bass guitarist for my brother." While attending Castro Valley High School, Burton worked at a ranch that rented out various equipment, called Castro Valley Rentals. There, he was nicknamed "Cowboy" because Cliff always wore a large cowboy hat. From September 1978 to January 1980, Cliff took bass guitar lessons. His teacher was Steve Doherty, who introduced him to playing in all styles, from classical to jazz.

Story

Hearing Burton play, Hetfield called it "amazing shredding." James and Lars were looking for a great guitarist at the time. When they heard that Burton's own bass solo had been heard, they decided to invite Cliff to their band. James and Lars asked him to replace the fired Ron McGovney, and after Burton began to understand that Trauma was becoming a commercial project, he agreed. His friends and bandmates: James Hetfield - founder of the group, guitarist, vocalist; Lars Ulrich - founder of the group, drummer; Kirk Hammett - guitarist.
