Persona Attributes

Bren

Brena has wavy, straight, dark brown hair that goes down to her shoulders. She has dark brown eyes, white skin and an angelic face. Very young despite his age. His appearance greatly belies the figure of his age. Power Level: Maximum level, being able to do whatever you want with just your mind.

Envy

Nicknames: Envy, the Jealous One. The Great Serpent. Occupation: Instigator Spy. Items used: Can transform into whoever he wants. Unique alchemy. Personal goals: To see the Homunculi dominate all humanity. To carry out Father's plans. To destroy the Elric family. To meet Hohenheim again in the parallel world to kill him. Race: Homunculi Gender: Genderless, however usually adopts an androgynous masculine appearance. Age: Approximately 175 years old (4th Homunculus to be created) between 200 and 430 years old approximately. Date of birth: Approximately 1740. Unique Traits: Shapeshifting ability, Intelligence, His abilities, Envy of humans, Hatred of the Elric Brothers. Envy is a Homunculus created by Father and the third to appear. Appearance Despite being a shapeshifter, he usually uses two appearances. The first appearance used most of the time is of a young man with a slender body and androgynous features. His hair is long and dark greenish. His eyes are dark purple. His skin is very white. He has defined arms. Its second form is that of a gigantic lizard-like monster with green skin and long black hair. In addition, in this form it has other bizarre characteristics such as four arms, four legs, and seven pupils in its left eye. Envy's original form is a small green lizard with eight legs and a large mouth as well as a tail, who needs a host. When in his humanoid form, Envy wears a tight, sleeveless T-shirt, shorts with a skirt-like top, a headband over his forehead, and a pair of gloves and socks similar to those worn by kickboxers. All in black like most Homunculi.

Envy

After passing through the Gate, Envy is permanently trapped in his dragon form, unable to use his shapeshifting powers due to the lack of alchemy in the parallel world. In his leviathan form, Envy's face and upper half of his body are mostly green. The lower half of Envy's serpentine body has a grayish-white underbelly, along with dark gray spots running parallel to the upper half. His Ouroboros mark is located on the outer part of his left thigh. Personality Envy is one of the most cruel Homunculi, reveling in and reveling in human misery and pain. Envy would kill without hesitation, often using and manipulating his target's emotions to gain a psychological advantage, with no remorse for what he does. Beneath this cruel exterior, however, Envy is secretly somewhat envious of the inner strength of humans and the mutually beneficial friendships they share, as most of his targets show little real concern or emotional support for one another. He may even be considered to have the deepest personality of all the Homunculi, as he has been shown to be emotionally conflicted over Edward being able to see through his jealousy so easily. Envy seems resentful of the confrontation with his inner envy. This eventually causes Envy to commit suicide. Notably, prior to this revelation, Envy had disguised his inner motives so well that not even a lapse of his true motives occurred. Despite his callous, ruthless, and sinister personality, Envy occasionally displays a more silly, rambunctious, and even comical personality around his fellow homunculi, and even some humans. When referring to his human appearance as being "cute and young", someone reminded them that they were, ironically, the cruelest homunculi, a response that angered Envy.

Envy

Another example was during Envy's second confrontation against Edward and Ling Yao, where Envy constantly asked Ed to stop trying to beat him up, but Ed was in a fit of rage after being called a midget and did not back down. Envy sometimes displays a vanity streak regarding his appearance. He becomes irritated when someone says his personality is 'vile' and almost attacks Greed when he calls him ugly. He obviously enjoys looking attractive, however, he seems to dislike his true appearance very much and yells at Ed and Ling not to look at him while in this form. Envy's relationship with Edward is poor due to him spitefully insulting the alchemist's size, calling him "Shorty". This incarnation of Envy is described as being jealous of the fatherly love that Edward and Alphonse received from Hohenheim. Although he hates both Elric brothers due to their relationship with Hohenheim, his animosity is mostly directed towards Edward (often mocking the alchemist's size, usually calling him "Dwarf"). He acts as a high-ranking enforcer, despite being aware of Dante's true intentions of keeping the stone for himself. Envy has a singular desire to kill Hohenheim, due to the lack of recognition of being his son and the abandonment he felt after his father saw him as an abomination. This resentment was so great that he threw himself at the gate to kill Hohenheim personally. This aforementioned hatred remained, with Dietlinde Eckhart stating that Hohenheim was the only means of keeping him under control. Envy seems pleased to finally get his lifelong revenge against his creator, despite knowing the risk of him being transmuted as well. Likewise, Envy shows hatred towards any reminder of Hohenheim, even stating that he cannot forgive Ed for being related to Hohenheim, and beating Pride for referring to him as Envy's father.

Envy

While Envy also looks very similar to Hohenheim in his true form, he opts for a completely different appearance and even lies to someone that he doesn't remember what he originally looked like. In his dragon form, Envy displays few traits of his former personality and seems to become more like a wild animal than the arrogant and cunning individual he once was, opting to roar and hiss at Edward rather than provoke him (despite his human speech capabilities), as well as making several reckless attempts on the young alchemist's life. It is speculated that this mental state may be the result of his psychological breakdown from the moment he forces the Gate to take him to Earth, coupled with the fact that he has been trapped as a dragon for the past two years. Unlike most other homunculi, Envy does not desire the Philosopher's Stone. He is also more intelligent and treacherous, as he manipulated Ira into becoming obsessed with revenge so that he could "run off and do what he was supposed to do". Deep down, Envy is the saddest homunculus, never having any true satisfaction, except when he shows satisfaction after managing to kill Hohenheim. Envy: You have no idea how good that felt! I devastated their entire country with a single bullet! I mean, talk about refreshing! Oh, and the best part? The officer I pretended to be; he was actually a moderate who had always publicly opposed the military occupation of Ishval! And get this! The poor guy couldn't come up with a plausible defense and they court-martialed him! You know, I don't think I'll ever get over how easy it is to manipulate humans!

Envy

Powers and Abilities Immortality: Envy does not age, though the physical age of his true form is a matter of debate. Rapid Regeneration: Envy can regenerate incredibly quickly from fatal wounds. One of the best examples is when he regenerates half of his body after being swallowed by Gluttony. However, what is unique about Envy is the fact that after being killed enough times, instead of remaining in humanoid form, he expels a small parasitic form resembling a lizard or worm that is easily killed. Immunity to Contamination: Envy is immune to all poisons, toxins, venoms, viruses, bacteria, allergens, diseases, etc. Self-sustaining: Envy does not need to eat, drink or breathe to stay alive. Enhanced Physiology: Even in his much smaller and preferred form, Envy possesses strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, durability, senses, agility, and coordination superior to that of any human, chimera, or animal. However, his lack of combat prowess has proven to be a disadvantage. Shapeshifting: Envy has the ability to transform into anything or anyone, be it real people, animals, or human aspects he has created. He can transform into anything that does not exceed the size and weight of his true form, which, given how massively large he is, does not pose much of a problem. This power is useful for going anywhere unnoticed or for fast travel, allowing Envy to transform into an ordinary citizen to blend into a crowd to hide, or a fast animal such as a horse or dog. Additionally, Envy can transform individual parts of his body, often using this ability in battle to turn his limbs into weapons. Even in his preferred human form, Envy's appearance reveals his true weight, something Ling Yao realized while fighting Envy. The weight of Envy's true form grants him enormous strength and durability.

Envy

Despite his immense weight, Envy is very fast in all forms he assumes. It is also noted that even in his human form, Envy can make his arms extendable (to an unknown length, however) and seemingly sharp appendages (as proven by the wounds he inflicted on Riza Hawkeye), similar to tentacles. True Form: In his monstrous form, Envy can use his strength to its fullest and become even more dangerous, being able to easily crush boulders under his limbs or in his jaws. Envy is also able to manipulate what covers his body, making it appear and disappear, and elongate his tongue to use it as a harpoon or binding rope, a continuation of his transformation ability. Envy can transform individual limbs into those of his true form, allowing him to gain enormous arms and hands while remaining in his preferred body. He does not become unbalanced while doing this, despite being extremely disproportionate. Impersonation: Envy is proficient at mimicking the personality and traits of other people. This, along with his shapeshifting, allows him to disguise himself as different individuals without arousing suspicion. The best example of this ability is when he tricked the people of Liore into believing he was Father Cornello, and Envy is even capable of inciting him to violence. However, his impersonations are not perfect, and Envy is prone to becoming overconfident in his disguises. People who are close to the person Envy is impersonating are also able to pick up on Envy's inconsistencies, such as when Hawkeye deduces that Envy is not the real Mustang. Possession: In his true, parasitic, original form, Envy's only remaining ability is to take control of the body of a human or Homunculus host.

Envy

The host then becomes an extension of Envy's parasitic body, capable of taking control of additional host bodies, using the host's soul or the Philosopher's Stone to replenish his strength. Envy appears to be able to activate this ability only by biting his victims while in his weakened form. However, Envy has noted that he cannot control someone by biting Automatic Mail, as seen when he failed to possess Edward. This ability is similar to Pride's ability to gain the characteristics of those he devours. With the body of a Dummy Soldier, Envy initially possessed only the abilities of a Dummy Soldier, along with the ability to absorb other Dummy Soldiers. Upon absorbing enough of them, Envy regained his previous abilities, transforming the Dummy Soldiers' bodies back into Envy's human appearance.

Alchemy

Alchemist An Alchemist is an individual who specializes in the practice and study of alchemy. Because the art of alchemy requires a thorough understanding of chemistry, physics, and ancient alchemical theory, alchemists are closer to scientists than magicians, but the ability to perform alchemy is also tied to an inherent talent for manipulating matter and energy, so not everyone can become a competent alchemist through study alone. Although essentially scientists, alchemists' abilities are incredibly practical and can be applied to the simple enhancement of normal life in the form of quick and relatively effortless repair of objects that would normally take a great deal of time and energy to fix. As such, alchemists are revered as productive members of society and hold the concept of Be Thou for the People as their unofficial creed. This creed dictates that alchemists use their abilities for the good of the public rather than for personal gain or political reasons, a creed generally rejected by alchemists who opt for government licensing and funding as State Alchemists. Despite their obligation to the people, alchemists are also careful to keep the secrets of their research out of the hands of the general public, so as to prevent the abuse of this knowledge and power by those with less than noble intentions. As such, alchemists often keep their research notes encoded so that only they, or other like-minded alchemical geniuses, can understand them.

Homunculus

A Homunculus refers to the medieval legendary concept of an artificially created human, presumably brought into existence by certain means of alchemy. In the series, the official definition of a Homunculus is "Any human that has been created or recreated by any Alchemy, Alkahestry, Grand Arcanum, and any other form of Alchemy." While a common concept, well known and understood by alchemists in Amestris, the idea of the Homunculus is considered nothing more than a hoax or distant fantasy, as no individual or group of alchemists has come close to successfully creating such a being in officially recorded history. Even so, alchemists have been forbidden by the Amestris government from attempting or researching the transmutation of humans, and the State Alchemists have such a restriction as part of their creed. However, outside of official record, not just one, but several such creatures were created in arcane and sinister secrecy. In the most relevant sense of the word, "Homunculus" refers to the eight individuals who make up the main antagonistic force of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. The Homunculi created by Father (with the sole exception of Pride) bear the mark of the Ouroboros on their bodies, and are identified as such by said mark. They are named after the seven deadly sins: Pride, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, and Envy.

State Alchemist

A State Alchemist is an alchemist employed by the U.S. State Army as part of an elite government-enforced program. As members of the military, State Alchemists have access to the most advanced alchemical resources, including exclusive access to the best research materials as well as state-of-the-art government laboratories, and receive a sizable research stipend each year, which can be used for any purpose a State Alchemist chooses. Also on the list of perks is an automatic military officer rank equivalent to Major and all the considerable military authority and governmental influence that comes with it. In exchange for these privileges, State Alchemists are required to obey three basic restrictions: 1. Obey the Military - As part of the military system, State Alchemists are subject to the governmental hierarchy and must obey the orders of their superiors, as well as dedicate themselves entirely to the protection, advancement, and well-being of the nation of Amestris as a whole. Their skills are to be wielded as an extension of the government's power, as opposed to as a means for individual or popular gain. This particular rule is the root of the most severe drawback of being a State Alchemist; while alchemists in general are revered by the populace, State Alchemists are treated with much animosity by those who are not completely satisfied with the current government's dealings. As Alchemists who have turned their backs on the concept of Be Thou for the People in exchange for government influence, they are often referred to as the "Dogs of the Military." Furthermore, since their successes on the front lines of the Ishval Civil War, State Alchemists with practical skills applicable to combat situations are ordered into battle as "Human Weapons," increasing their relative unpopularity.

State Alchemist

2. Do Not Create Gold - While all alchemists in the nation of Amestris are required to abide by this law to prevent the national economy from falling into chaos, State Alchemists are more heavily pressured to uphold this standard due to their position under government surveillance, and are subject to military prosecution should they transgress. 3. Do Not Create Humans - The nationwide ban on Human Transmutation, while also applied to all Master Alchemists, is particularly forbidden to State Alchemists due to the fact that their access to advanced research notes and materials makes it more likely that one would make a realistic attempt to use the forbidden art in the service of the government. While it is widely assumed that this law is in place because of the moral and ethical ramifications of attempting to toy with human life, as well as the considerable danger involved in dealing in Human Transmutation, it is revealed that the true motive behind the government ban is to prevent individuals from alchemically manufacturing their own personal armies of homunculi. State Certification To be selected as a State Alchemist, candidates must pass an extensive examination process that involves a written test that proves a high level of aptitude in the field, a psychological evaluation to determine whether the candidate has sufficient mental capacity to serve in such a specialized branch of the military, and a practical examination in which the candidate proves to a military board whether or not his or her skills can be used in real-world situations. Upon acceptance into the State Alchemy program, candidates receive a specially printed certificate of achievement, marked with a symbolic title decided by the Fuhrer based on their unique alchemical abilities as well as their personal traits and disposition.

State Alchemist

The document, as shown in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, reads as follows: This official document certifies that the nation of Amestris, prefecture of the Generalissimo names the name *CODE NAME HERE* to *ALCHEMIST NAME HERE*, in the name of Fuhrer King Bradley. The State Alchemist will follow all orders and policies of the military. A research assessment exam will be held once a year. Should the State Alchemist show no signs of progress in his research as a result of the exam, he will be dismissed from the services of State Alchemist. The State Alchemist is entitled to use of extensive research funds, unrestricted access to classified documentation, access to various government facilities, and a military rank equivalent to "major." - King Bradley Additionally, each State Alchemist is given a silver pocket watch to hold as identification. This watch is engraved with the symbol of the State Alchemist program, the Amestrian Dragon circumscribed within a hexagram (although both anime series change the hexagram to an undefined polygram, presumably so as not to invoke Judaism). While the manga does not describe the pocket watch as anything more than official proof that the wearer is a State Alchemist, the 2003 anime suggests that each pocket watch is an alchemical amplifier. The 2003 anime also describes the watch's silver chain as extendable, as in the case where the Strong Arm Alchemist, Major Alex Louis Armstrong, uses it to bind a target. While State Alchemists have more or less free license to act as they please within their rank, each of them must submit an annual evaluation report detailing the results of their research over the past year to prove that they are using their grant money and resources appropriately enough to warrant continued membership in the program.

State Alchemist

It seems that State Alchemists who fail to submit a proper report are placed on probation for the next year, and that a second failure results in the revocation of their government license. King Bradley can simply renew his license if he wants, sparing the State Alchemists the formality; when Ed went to renew his license, Bradley coincidentally ran into him and signed the paperwork to renew it. Although this seems to apply to those who are not yet in the military; Mustang and Armstrong are never mentioned as having to go through this, presumably because they are already serving in the State Army. In fact, the State Alchemist program is part of Father's plan leading to the Promised Day, a system to identify and select candidates for Human Sacrifice. This is likely why Ira/Bradley renewed Ed's license without the hassle of having him submit a report; keeping him as part of the program would allow the Homunculi to better track him.
