Tachibana Kanade

Appearance

Kanade is teenage girl with light-skin and waist-length white hair (often mistaken to be blue) that's tied up with a pale blue barrette clip on the back of her head, which keeps a part of her hair up. She also has front bangs covering both of her eyebrows. She has yellow/gold eyes with hints of auburn/brown in certain lighting. Her eyes are slightly curved up to fit with her mysterious and Kuudere vibe. She wears the standard uniform of the Afterlife School: a skirt over a white petticoat, white knee-high socks, and brown loafers. Kanade is very petite and is only 150 cm (4'11") tall. After her seeming reincarnation, Kanade is shown with short hair tied in a ponytail.

Personality

Kanade does not appear to be much different than a typical High School girl, but this is contrasted by her lack of detectable emotion. It is difficult to understand what she is thinking due to her rarely showing any outward emotion. Her lack of expression also makes it difficult to determine whether or not she has any consciousness. The story reveals her to be rather intelligent, as she was able to make use of the Angel Player program, creating weapons and giving herself defense mechanisms. This lead to the Afterlife Battle Front to believe she is an angel from God. In later events, she is shown to have abandoned being friendly because of the rules of the world she is in, as her newly-found friends inevitably leave her when they disappear. As the series progresses, she shows a little of her emotions, mostly to Otonashi. In Episode 13, Kanade goes as far as to give a small pout and can be seen smiling at times.

Background

Although there is not much known about Kanade's past, it is revealed that during Otonashi's last moments alive, he used what strength he had left to sign as an Organ Donor on the back of his ID. From options that were listed, he circled to donate his heart, and as it turned out, Otonashi was Kanade's donor. It's not been revealed how exactly Kanade died, but it is strongly implied that she had Heart Disease and survived for some time after receiving Otonashi's heart. Despite having a donor, it's very likely that it eventually failed to support her before she could graduate High School. Kanade has spent a while in the afterlife, stating that everyone who has been her friend before vanished or was obliterated. This implies that she has spent a good deal of time in the afterlife and has tried to help everyone "graduate".
