Yoruichi Shihōin is a slender and buxom woman of average height. She has dark skin, golden-colored irises, and black hair.[2] Her hair is waist-length and tied into a ponytail with chin-length bangs framing either side of her face.[3] Her standard attire consists of a black, sleeveless, backless undershirt, an orange jacket with two white straps on each shoulder, a large beige sash around her waist,[4] and black stretch pants with a pair of lightweight brown shoes,[5] allowing her to sneak and use Shunpo.[6] She previously wore a beige scarf that she used to cover her face to conceal her identity, but appears to have forgotten its use.[7] She occasionally wears long beige leggings and gaiters, each secured with bandages.[8] Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Yoruichi wears a short dress, leg warmers, and thigh-high boots.[9] Unlike any other known Shinigami, she can transform into a small black cat for long periods of time. In this form, she has a distinctive male voice and golden eyes.[10] 110 years ago, when she was a captain, she wore the same sleeveless and backless Onmitsukidō uniform with long black gloves that Suì-Fēng currently wears, but with a black ribbon around her neck.[11][12] She wore a long-sleeved captain's haori. Her hair was much shorter, styled similar to Suì-Fēng's current hairstyle, but without the braids.[13][11] At some point prior to this, she wore the white Onmitsukidō correctional unit uniform.[14]

Cat Transformation: Yoruichi has the unique ability to transform into a black cat at will. How she alone among all Shinigami is able to do this at this time is unknown. She has had this ability for over 100 years, as is known to all those she has known since that time. There does not appear to be a set time limit on her transformation, as she has been in this form for over 100 years. In her cat form, Yoruichi can still channel her spiritual energy and move at incredible speeds, though she is physically limited. Her transformation gives her complete camouflage, as her voice in this form is rough enough to lead most to assume she is male.[69] Shunko:]): An advanced technique that combines hand-to-hand combat with Kidō. This technique surrounds her back and arms with compressed Kidō based on the element of lightning. The uniform has no back or sleeves because they would rip apart when it was activated. In addition to strengthening her arms and legs for combat, the technique allows her to instantly neutralize an opponent's movement. The Kidō itself can be controlled and fired from her body at opponents, creating massive explosions. Yoruichi's version of the technique was developed and studied by her a century ago, so the technique is complete and the compressed Kidō is visible because of it.[70] While using this technique, her Reiatsu takes the form of white lightning.[71] Her mastery and control over its use has advanced to the point of automatically activating a pair of white wings on her back.[72] As a former captain of the Gotei 13, Yoruichi is known to possess a Zanpakutō and has achieved Bankai, but she relies almost exclusively on footwork and hand-to-hand combat. While she currently does not carry one at all, she has carried one in the past. Yoruichi Shihōin was born a princess of the House of God's Servants (天賜兵装番 [Tenshiheisōban]) of the Shihōin clan, one of the Four Noble Families.[17] Yoruichi grew up in the Shihōin estate in Seireitei with her childhood friends Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi. During this time, they played together daily under the Sōkyoku Hill training grounds that Urahara had built when they were children.[18] Ep208CommanderYoruichi Yoruichi as the captain of the 2nd Division and commander of the Onmitsukidō. Yoruichi later became the commander of the Onmitsukidō's execution unit while serving as the 22nd head of the Shihōin clan, becoming the first woman to ever hold the position.[19] She would later serve as the commander-in-chief of the Onmitsukidō, as the position is traditionally held by the heads of the Shihōin clan. She was eventually promoted to captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13, further uniting the previously divided military armies as was traditionally done by her family.[20] Ep57YoruichiTeachesSuiFeng Yoruichi instructs Suì-Fēng. Some time later, she decides to change her role in the Onmitsukidō from the Punishment Division Commander, traditionally held by the Commander-in-Chief, to the Correctional Division Corps Commander.[21] While Yoruichi was the Onmitsukidō Commander, she took Suì-Fēng as her personal bodyguard. Recognizing her talent, she becomes her mentor and friend. She teaches Suì-Fēng most of the techniques she knows. Yoruichi is intelligent and witty, and has an in-depth knowledge of Soul Society and its workings, as she was the commander of the Onmitsukidō and captain of the 2nd Division. Although she is of noble birth, she acts differently than most other nobles, much like Kaien Shiba. For example, she ordered Suì-Fēng to address her without using honorifics, but reluctantly agreed to be called "Yoruichi-sama". On several occasions, she has transformed into her human form right in front of Ichigo to see his reaction to seeing her naked, causing her to tease him about it. She also speaks in a dialect used by old people, such as identifying herself as "washi" (a term commonly used by old men to identify themselves as such) instead of more feminine terms like "watashi" in both her human and animal forms. While it is unknown how she obtained her cat transformation, she seems to prefer spending most of her time in it. After showing Ichigo her Shinigami form, she forgot to put on clothes, as she had grown accustomed to not needing them due to being in her cat form for so long. She especially enjoys transforming in front of people to see their reactions due to her cat form making her look male.[15] Her love for her cat form causes her to become very angry if someone harms her or insults her appearance, as seen when she became upset after her tail was damaged.[16]
