Douma was born with an unusual eye color, causing his parents to believe that he was special and could hear the voices of the gods. They raised him to be the leader of the Eternal Paradise Cult, which he remained until his death.[1] When Douma was a child, his father often cheated on his mother with cult followers, causing her to go crazy and stab her father, later poisoning herself and dying next to him. Hakuji (Akaza, being a human) took care of his sick father for a long time. To pay for medicine, he would go out into town to rob pickpockets. In a letter he left behind, he stated that he wanted Hakuji to live a full life, and that he did not want to take any medicine if it was a result of stealing. With numerous criminal tattoos, Hakuji was eventually driven out of Edo, and it was then that he met Keizo, the owner of a dojo with no students. Keizo decided to take Hakuji under his wing so that he could look after Koyuki, Keizo's sick daughter, after her previous caretaker (her mother) drowned as a result of stress. Hakuji eventually looked after Koyuki until, three years later, she was in good health and able to stand up and do housework. Additionally, he also trained as Keizo's disciple in the Soryu style, which healed his soul. Eventually, Keizo asked Hakuji to take over the dojo and become Koyuki's husband, which he agreed to.
