Story

Darrell Lance Abbott was born in Arlington, Texas, a suburb of Dallas and Fort Worth, to musician and producer Jerry Abbott. His father owned Pantego Sound Studios, where Darrell saw and heard many blues guitarists, but after he heard Ace Frehley from Kiss, he wanted to start playing the guitar himself. By that time, his older brother Vinnie Paul had already learned to play the drums. Darrell also tried to master the instrument, but Vinnie said that he was not good at the drums and advised Darrell to look for another instrument. Darrell asked his father for a guitar. It was a Hondo Les Paul, and soon the brothers were jamming together. After a while, Darrell began to participate in various competitions, often with guitarists who had been playing for 10 years longer than him, but nevertheless, he won. At one of these competitions, he received a Dean ML guitar as a prize, with which Darrell spent most of his musical life. By the age of 18, he was no longer allowed anywhere, since he won too often, but he was willingly invited to be a judge. In 1981, Vinnie Paul and Darrell put together their first band, Pantera. The members were 15-17 years old, and Vinnie's comrades were against Darrell's participation, considering him "too young." Vinnie said that either Darrell plays or there will be no band. His brother's dime did not disappoint, and he soon became the band's main lead guitarist. Darrell favored Jackson Guitars, the star-shaped ones. His friends and bandmates include: Phil Anselmo - vocalist; Rex Brown - bass guitarist; Vinnie Paul - drummer and Darrell's brother.
