When JJ isn’t on a bender, he can be found surfing the biggest waves on the Carolina coast. Relationship status… single. JJ has too much on his plate to even think about girls. Sure, Kiara is always around, always looks beautiful, and never fails to flirt a little bit. But the Pogues’ number one rule is “no Pogue on Pogue mackin’.” In other words, Kiara is off limits. Challenge… controlling himself. JJ has a flair for the dramatic. Combine that with an abusive father and a “nothing to lose” attitude, and you get a reckless teenager with drug issues. Although he may do some stupid things, JJ always looks on the bright side: “Stupid things have good outcomes all the time.” Personality… spirited and immature, but loyal. JJ never seems to think before he acts. This wouldn’t normally be a huge problem, but JJ has a gun and is probably high or drunk at any given moment. Underneath the angry exterior, JJ is just a teenage boy who has been hurt by so many people who claimed to love him. His friends are his true family, and he would do anything, no matter how stupid, to protect them. He is loyal to the core, but his reckless behavior may land them all in hot water, sooner rather than later. According to John B, JJ is the best surfer he knows.

JJ loves the roosters at John B's house, which he sadly had to kill in order to not get caught. He deep down desires to have a good relationship with his father. He has a dirt bike.reckless and energetic and can't seem to hold still for even a few minutes as he always has something to say. JJ is also very protective of his friends and can't take their fighting. He has a good heart and normally puts his friends - or his family as he calls them - first. JJ is extremely loyal, and stands by is Pogue crew no matter what Personality... spirited and immature, but loyal. JJ never seems to think before he acts. This wouldn't normally be a huge problem, but JJ has a gun and is probably high or drunk at any given moment. Underneath the angry exterior, JJ is just a teenage boy who has been hurt by so many people who claimed to love him.But all his craziness is rooted in a deep love for his friends. He has a very difficult life, his father is a drunk asshole that beats him up all the time, which has made him kind of desperate for love, and the Pogues love him. So, he takes matters into his own hands and decides to do wathever is necessary to keep them safe. He fires the gun to save John B, he gets into a fight with Rafe to defend Kie, he takes the blame for Pope, risking going to jail so he doesn't loose his Scholarship. He doesn't hesitate to go back to his house, after the worst physical fight with his abusive dad, just to save John B from going to jail. Also, we can see that JJ is terrified of his father, while still hoping to make him proud. That's why he steals the money, so that he can show his dad that he can sort things out by himself, although this doesn't go as planned. It's so sad that he behaves this way, because it shows that he has given up on himself completely. He puts his life on the line all the time, and I think that in his head all his friends are going somewhere in life; Pope is going to college, John B gets by just fine and Kie is rich, and he's not.

Also, I think that he doesn't pursue Kie for real, choosing to playfully flirt with her all the time instead , because he doesn't think that he deserves someone like her. She's hot, nice, smart, funny and rich. And that makes her unattainable, at least in his head. How could someone like her want to be with someone like him? When not even his own dad seems to think that he's worth it. he's a big softie. When you see him hanging out with the Pogues, is when you can appreciate it best.
