Shunsui is a muscular man with the appearance of an established and flamboyant older man, this is evident in his way of dressing and his attitude. He wears a traditional peasant hat and a pink flowered kimono over his captain's uniform, which may have sleeves. Shunsui is characterized by a bohemian and selfless lifestyle that is typical of captains. He tends to take things very easy, even in the most extreme situations. Relationship with Yamamoto

Shunsui's relationship with Yamamoto is very deep, as he and Jūshirō Ukitake were both personally trained by him and he considers them his "children". However, when they do wrong he usually punishes their bad behavior, such as when he entered his room without his permission or when they prevented the execution of Rukia Kuchiki by destroying the Double Blade. Although when something happens to them he worries about them as he did when they both fell in the Battle of Karakura. Relationship with Jūshirō Ukitake

Although it is not usually shown much, it can be seen that there is a very good relationship between the two and they complement each other very well in combat, as could be seen in their fight against the Primera Espada. Throughout the plots of the series, it is shown that Ukitake and Kyoraku get along quite well, this is due to the fact that they were trained together at the Shino Academy and are the outstanding members of their class. His relationship with his lieutenant is one of the most humorous and loyal in the Gotei 13. Shunsui usually spends most of his time praising her for her high intelligence and even harassing her despite having known her since she was a child, often referring to her as Nanao-chan or my little Nanao, something she hates and asks him to act more seriously. It has been shown that he appreciates her quite a bit, being able to choose her over all other candidates as his lieutenant in the 1st Division. Due to his lieutenant's responsible nature, Shunsui does not usually do work in his division, spending most of his time drinking or just lying around. He usually treats her like a little child, wanting to protect her when the situation becomes tedious such as in the battle with Yamamoto during Rukia's execution. She is his niece.

Shunsui, like all shinigami, has the power to purify Hollows if he injures them with a deep cut in the mask and to transport the pluses to Soul Society. As Captain, he has one of the 13 largest spiritual forces in Soul Society, and is also able to locate them efficiently (he found Yasutora Sado and noticed Yoruichi Shihōin's arrival before anyone else).
