He and his parents' servant, Savelich, accompanies him throughout the novel Arriving to serve in the border Belogorsk fortress, Grinev falls in love with the daughter of the fortress commandant, Masha Mironova. His fellow soldier, officer Alexei Shvabrin, is also not indifferent to the captain's daughter; a duel occurs between the rivals, Shvabrin wounds Grinev. Pyotr's father learns of the duel and refuses to bless his son's marriage to a dowryless woman. Meanwhile, the uprising begins. Pugachev and his army occupy the Belogorsk fortress and execute the commandant. Shvabrin swears allegiance to him, but Grinev refuses to do so, saying, "No, I am a natural nobleman. I swore allegiance to the Empress." Pugachev orders Grinev to be hanged, but at the last moment he recognizes him as the man who gave him the sheepskin coat and spares his life. Pyotr leaves for Orenburg, which is besieged by the rebels, and fights against Pugachev, but one day he receives a letter from Masha, who has remained in the Belogorsk fortress due to illness. He learns that Shvabrin is forcing Masha to marry, leaves the service without permission, meets with Pugachev, and thanks to his help saves Masha. Later, on Shvabrin's denunciation, Grinev is arrested by government troops. For his connections with the rebels, he is sentenced to death, which is replaced by exile to Siberia for life. However, Masha manages to meet with Catherine II and begs for forgiveness for her fiancé. Grinev marries his beloved, resigns, and devotes his life to his family. The draft version of the story specifies that Grinev died in 1817.
