Appearance

Jimmy is an adult male with straight brown hair slicked into a middle part, brown eyes, and stubble. His clothing consists of the Pony Express jumpsuit, a white long-sleeved t-shirt underneath, and black sneakers. He has some wrinkles and appears to have a thinner body type

Personality

Jimmy is a very complex character, shown to both experience guilt for some of his actions while also being intentionally manipulative and spiteful. It was mentioned that he has struggled with life back on earth and likely sought for a life of control, hence why he felt comfortable as the co-pilot. However, he felt as though he had been climbing the ladder while Curly was already at the top. Throughout the game, he attempts to take responsibility and fix things, while not recognising that his own actions are the reason why the crew is even in this position. He often repeats other people's words without understanding their meaning and applies them to himself to excuse the things he's done. He is very unreliable as a narrator.

history

Jimmy is very envious of Curly's position as a captain pre-crash, wishing to gain the same amount of power as him, and not recognizing how many responsibilities and tasks a captain has. He acts impulsively and without thinking, such as crashing the ship and regretting it right after, which ultimately left Curly severely injured and incapacitated as captain. He lied to the crew and blamed Curly for the crash so he wouldn't have to deal with the consequences. As captain, he quickly got overwhelmed and berated other members of the crew, primarily Anya when she asked him to help with the painkillers. Eventually he recognizes that he's not built to be a captain and Curly should've stayed as that all along

He also takes advantage of all the crew members in some way. He convinces Daisuke to climb into the damaged vent by telling him that Swansea would be proud of him, despite Swansea's warnings that it would be dangerous. When Daisuke was injured, Jimmy tries to use the mouthwash as a disinfectant despite Anya's warning that it had too much sugar to be effective. Jimmy insults Swansea for killing Daisuke even though he was in tremendous pain and wouldn't have been able to survive the wounds.

Jimmy often quickly jumps to conclusions, assuming the worst in people. He yells at Curly during the birthday party for wanting to leave everyone behind, or when Swansea mercy killed Daisuke. He also projects his own traits and insecurities on others, such as when he assumed Swansea wanted to keep the pod for himself.

He also chose to not take the Pony Express mandated psych evaluations serious, stating that he experiences sexual attraction to a cartoon horse. In Anya's words, Jimmy thinks that they're a waste of time.

Biography

Jimmy was described as "struggling back on Earth" by Curly. Under Curly's suggestion, Jimmy begins to work for Pony Express and has been doing so for years before the beginning of the game. Potentially due to nepotism, Jimmy rises in the ranks but feels forever below Curly and eventually becomes resentful. On the trip seen in the game, it is indirectly stated that Jimmy rapes Anya and impregnates her.

Relationships Curly

Jimmy both deeply hates and admires Curly. His resentment can be seen when he accuses Curly of disposing of his crew when it is announced that everyone will be fired. Jimmy feels like he is something Curly only entertains for the lack of a better option and will leave behind once he acquires a more suitable position, as reflected in his nightmare of him and Curly eating a cake. After Curly is rendered helpless by the crash, Jimmy torments his former friend, pushing the pills down his throat and physically abusing him.

Jimmy does not treat Anya as a person worthy of respect. He disregards her qualifications and often mocks her with demeaning and sexual comments. Subtext also reveals that he raped Anya resulting in her later pregnancy. She acts submissive and is easily startled by Jimmy, revealing her ongoing fear of him to Curly. She feared Jimmy to the extent of hiding the only gun on board from him. From Jimmy's dream sequences, it is implied that he did not feel guilt for her death or raping her, but was concerned about her pregnancy. It is implied that Jimmy told Anya to kill herself and/or the baby when Anya revealed her pregnancy.

relationship Daisuke

Jimmy sees Daisuke as a rich kid who wouldn't struggle to find a job thanks to his parents. Despite this, Jimmy is still amicable with Daisuke, as seen when he plays along with Daisuke's plans of giving the interviews after being rescued in spite of the improbability of them being found. Later in the game, Jimmy manipulates Daisuke's emotions to make him spike Swansea's drink and climb in the vents, with the latter resulting in a severe injury. Despite his role in it, Jimmy tries to "save" Daisuke. When Swansea puts Daisuke out of his misery, Jimmy gets mad and blames him

Trivia

The name Jimmy means “he who supplants,” which indicates someone who may forcefully take a position or role belonging to someone else, symbolizing his superseding role as the de facto captain. A funny doodle of Jimmy called 'Yimpy' can be found on the wall in the medical office. It is a drawing of his face close up on a sticky note. Looking at the sticky note for ten seconds unlocks an achievement. Jimmy's line about cartoon horses wasn't intended to reference Bronies. It was directed at Polle, and the development team didn't make the connection until the game came out.[2] Jimmy's favorite Pokémon is Mega Rayquaza.[2] Jimmy was named after Lana Del Rey's song “A&W”.[2] Parts of the song discuss rape culture and explicitly mention the name 'Jimmy'. At first, the player was meant to question whether they were playing as Jimmy or Curly more, but that quickly became more frustrating and confusing than compelling. Because of that, this idea was disregarded.[3] Jimmy was a difficult character to design because he was meant to remain an “everyman” to a degree while still having enough of a strong visual character concept to fit in with the rest of the cast.[3] One year, Jimmy and the rest of Curly's friends made him a birthday cake out of chocolate and caramel whey protein powder, which collapsed under its weight and tasted like a chalkboard. It became one of Curly’s fondest birthday memories.[3] Jimmy broke the Polle statue in the lounge. Swansea, drunk off of Mouthwash, thought that this was hilarious. When asked about what hobbies the crew members have, it is stated that Jimmy is into weightlifting, because "Hobbies are for people who can afford them."
