Kurozu-Cho

Kurôzu-Cho is a relatively small and isolated town, between the mountains and the sea. A gigantic black spiral formed by the ashes and smoke of incinerated corpses can often be seen above the town. The town has its own secondary school, situated on a hill overlooking the town. It also has its own hospital with a maternity ward and at least one surgeon on staff. The train station runs through the center of the city and appears to be the usual means of transportation for residents to get to nearby towns. Many of the station's passengers are dressed in business suits, suggesting that Kurôzu-Cho's office workers must travel elsewhere for work. The city appears to have a low rate of car ownership, as most of its vehicles are concentrated around the central train station. The city is accessible via a road tunnel that runs through the mountains. The name "Kurôzu-Cho" has multiple translations into English, including: "Dark City", "Closed City", "Black Spiral City", "Maelstrom City". The town has more than 6,000 inhabitants in total. The town has a lighthouse that has been broken for years, but at some point it will light up due to the spirals. The lighthouse bulb will burn out, forming a spiral. The light from the lighthouse will be very powerful up close, managing to incinerate people in fractions of a second. From a distance, the lighthouse will not harm anyone at all.

Spirals

The spirals that appear most in the town are the "Archimedean Spirals" and the "Logarithmic Spirals". What is the difference between these two types of spirals? Archimedean spirals are spirals that have constant separation between each of their strokes, that is, there will be more space in between the larger this type of spiral is made. On the other hand, Logarithmic spirals are the opposite of Archimedean spirals; they have little separation in each of their strokes. Archimedean and logarithmic spirals are common sights in nature: be it the shells of snails, pottery, human fingerprints or the cochlea. The spiral is something that is everywhere, and that is explained by the Fibonacci Sequence: the sequence of natural numbers that are related to each other thanks to the previous number.

The Curse of the Spirals

The Spiral is confirmed to only affect Kurōzu-Cho, and follows a pattern in wiping out the town: first come the "random" deaths and disappearances, and "strange" cases of obsession with the pattern, then come more severe effects such as multiple hurricanes and tornadoes, then the town becomes an inescapable pile of rubble, until finally, Kurōzu-Cho is rebuilt as a gigantic spiral house and everyone inside is absorbed into the City of Spirals. Being a near-omnipotent force, the Spiral can control the minds and bodies of humans and animals. It can also bend nature and the laws of physics to its own will, as it constantly demonstrates. The Spiral can control the weather, atmosphere, and air pressure within Kurozu-Cho, as well as the ocean within the city limits. Some minor effects of the Spirals are the rippling of the grass, which forms spirals; swirls in the water (in some strange way) and the strange spirals that the sky forms at all times of the day. The curse affects people and/or the town in different ways. At an advanced stage of the curse, hurricanes will begin to appear, and at the slightest loud noise or sudden movement, tornadoes will form and take people away. In the middle stage, the spiral will be able to make people turn into human snails, and spirals will form in the hair of girls who will have self-awareness.

The Curse of the Spirals, Part 2

In the most severe stage, Kurôzu-Cho will end up being rebuilt (after the hurricanes and tornadoes) in the form of a gigantic spiral; in the center, there will no longer be Dragonfly Lake (the village lake), and there will be the stairs to the City of Spirals (below the village of Kurôzu-Cho). At a stage between Intermediate and Advanced, the curse will affect mosquitoes and they will bite pregnant women. After being bitten, the women (who will be in the Kurozu hospital) will go to other patients' rooms at night to suck their blood, piercing their necks with any object they can get their hands on and sucking the blood of their victims with their tongues.

Kirie's appearance

Kirie is a rather tall girl (probably one of the tallest girls in Kurôzu-Cho), with pale skin, average weight and build, with straight red hair down to her upper back where there are side bangs tucked behind her ear, big blue eyes, thin eyebrows, and she also seems to be wearing heavy lipstick and mascara. In some future, Kirie's hair will be infected by the coils, so Shuichi will end up cutting it very short. She mostly spends her time in her school uniform. When she's not wearing it, she often wears a long-sleeved button-down shirt tucked into jeans or a long-sleeved shirt with a skirt.

Kirie's personality

Kirie is a serious, practical, and mature young woman who angers easily and is rarely in the mood for pranks. At times, she can be harsh, brusque, and severely critical of others, but she is also gentle and caring, and is able to understand others, even when they annoy her. She is protective of her little brother, Mitsuo Goshima, though he teases her in a habitual brotherly manner. Kirie routinely prepares and delivers food to a depressed and lonely Shuichi Saito who would otherwise not eat.

Shuichi Saito, datos

Shuichi's appearance

Shuichi is a very tall and delicately built boy with pale skin, short curly black hair, and light green eyes. He tends to dress formally, however, most of his clothes seem to be too big for him due to him being so thin. Shuichi, unlike other boys, has delicate and slightly feminine features.

Shuichi's personality

Shuichi is a timid and fearful individual, as well as extremely depressive and when agitated, displays erratic and manic behavior. He is generally shy and rather reclusive, only going out when necessary for Kirie's well-being, or when she urges him to do so. He would do anything for Kirie and tries to protect her at all costs, even staying in Kurôzu-Cho because she does not want to leave. Except when he is in situations that threaten his or Kirie's safety, he appears soft-spoken and submissive and does not respond when attacked, likely out of a desire not to start a fight. He seems to stutter quite a bit when talking to people other than Kirie.

Azami Kurotani, datos

Age: 17 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Status: Affected by the curse from an early age. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Future residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Kirie Goshima (friend), Shuichi Saito (future obsession). Death: Azami will be the second to die, being eaten away by the mark on her forehead, which has become a spiral (in addition, she will take one of the boys in love with her to his death)

Azami's appearance

Azami is a "pretty" girl (as described by Kirie Goshima) with straight black bob-cut hair that has thick bangs where her thin eyebrows peek out from underneath, big brown eyes, appears to be wearing lipstick which is depicted as having bright red lips, and is shorter than Kirie. Azami has a small crescent-shaped scar on her forehead, which she got when she was little when she tried to impress the boy she liked, hitting her forehead when she tried to walk over the handrail, falling to the ground and bleeding from it. Since that day, in her words, that scar only makes men fall in love (what she doesn't know is that she is infected by the Spirals). In the future, when Azami's obsession with Shuichi increases exponentially, the scar on her head will turn into a spiral; which will end up absorbing her and another boy until they disappear completely.

Azami's Personality

Azami is first introduced as a friendly and cheerful girl who is the subject of rumors at her school, but takes them up with Kirie Goshima in an attempt to dispel them, leaving Kirie unconvinced. She is excitable and enthusiastic, but deeply irritated by the constant interest of boys her age and shows them no mercy when she rejects them. Though given the abuse she suffers following said rejection, her coldness is likely well-founded.

Yasuo Goshima, datos

Age: 59 years old. Gender: Male. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Occupation: Local potter of Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Chizuku Goshima (wife, mother of his children), Kirie Goshima (eldest daughter), Mitsuo Goshima (youngest son), Shuichi Saito (son-in-law, boyfriend of his eldest daughter). Death: Near the end, when the City of Spirals has been opened, he will be taken to the center to turn to stone along with his wife.

Yasuo's appearance

Yasuo has a narrow face with marked age lines, short eyebrows, and a slight stubble. His hair is short and wavy, and given how similar he is to Kirie Goshima, it's assumed he has red hair like her, as he's her father.

Yasuo's Personality

Yasuo is a potter very dedicated to his art. When not contaminated by the spiral, Yasuo is usually very calm and relaxed, something that Kirie Goshima may have inherited.

Chizuku Goshima, datos

Age: 58 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Yasuo Goshima (husband, father of her children), Kirie Goshima (eldest daughter), Mitsuo Goshima (youngest son), Shuichi Saito (son-in-law, boyfriend of her eldest daughter). Death: Like her husband, she will be turned to stone upon reaching the City of Spirals.

Apparel of Chizuku

Mrs. Goshima has wavy black hair cut in a bob style with bangs swept to one side. She has an elliptical face with a pointed chin and wrinkles around her eyes and mouth.

Chizuku's Personality

Mrs. Goshima is a loving mother who faithfully cares for Kirie Goshima, Mitsuo Goshima, and her husband. She is generous, prompting Kirie to invite a hungry Shuichi Saito to dinner. Like her daughter, she also displays an ability to maintain her composure in situations that terrify other characters to tears.

Mitsuo Goshima, datos

Mitsuo is a short boy, with very short black hair, big brown eyes and a round face.

Mitsuo's personality

Mitsuo tends to be unpleasant and impulsive, much to the chagrin of his parents (and Kirie Goshima). He has a bad habit of doing things without thinking them through.

Toshio Saito, datos

Age: 58 years old. Gender: Male. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Status: Affected by the Spirals. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Yukie Saito (wife), Shuichi Saito (only son), Kirie Goshima (daughter-in-law). Obsession: Spirals. Cause of death: Toshio will be the first victim, after making his tongue into a spiral, he will get into a small wooden bathtub and end up cutting himself to death.

Toshio's appearance

Mr. Saito is rather thin and appears to be well past middle age. He has age wrinkles all over his face, a cleft chin, and slicked-back gray hair. He wears rounded, square glasses with thick black frames, and like most people in the village, he dresses somewhat formally.

Toshio's Personality

Mr. Saito was previously an ordinary man like most of the villagers. He took care of his wife and son, providing for their well-being, as shown by sending Shuichi to the school in the village closest to Kurôzu-Cho: Midoriyama, so that he could have a better education. After being affected by the Spiral, Toshio became obsessed with objects that had this shape; be it snail shells, objects, or pottery. He collects a wide variety of objects that have this shape or show at least one spiral. Since then, he has refused to eat even if his food does not have spirals.

Yukie Saito

Age: 58 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Toshio Saito (husband, father of her son), Shuichi Saito (only son), Kirie Goshima (daughter-in-law). Status: Scared by her husband's obsession. Death: After having cut off her fingerprints and hair, Mrs. Saito will end up burying scissors in her ear in order to destroy her fingerprints and hair.

Yukie's appearance

Yukie is a middle-aged woman with wrinkles around her forehead, eyes, and mouth. She has black hair tied back and usually wears dark, mature clothing with a knee-length skirt.

Yukie's Personality

Yukie Saito is a reasonable woman by nature. She cares deeply for Shuichi and her husband, and wants Mr. Saito to receive professional help so that he can get better and return to work, and so that he will not be a source of stress for her and her son.

Katayama, datos

Tsumura's appearance

Tsumura has a narrow face with a pointed chin. He has a thin build, a mole under his eye, protruding teeth, and hair that covers his ears and parts on either side of his face.

Tsumura's Personality

Shiho describes him as someone with the potential to be "a real jerk". He mercilessly bullies Katayama for his slow movements and becomes physically abusive after Katayama's slow movements and reflexes cost them the volleyball game during class. He forcibly undresses Katayama with the help of other male friends and drags him completely naked into the hallway for everyone to see, which he encourages them to do.

Kyoko Sekino, datos

Age: 18 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Status: She will be affected in the future, her hair will become self-aware. Death: Kyoko will die doing what she likes most: attracting attention, but it will be after her hair (which at one point formed spirals in it because Kyoko became jealous when she saw that Kirie was attracting attention) has consumed all of its vital life, remaining lying against a pole that connects the town's cables.

Appearance of Kyoko

Sekino has back-length black hair that is usually seen tied back in a headband, appears to be wearing a considerable amount of makeup, and is shorter than Kirie Goshima.

Kyoko's personality

Sekino seems to be a reasonable person, who wants to stand out from the crowd and be noticed. He is also known to make ignorant and sometimes offensive comments (for example, stating that his schoolmate who died was lucky because his death earned him attention from others).

Mitsuru Yamaguchi, datos

Age: 13 years old. Gender: Male. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Kirie Goshima (love interest, person he is obsessed with), Shuichi Saito (rival for Kirie's love). Death: After trying to show the power of his "love" to Kirie, Yamaguchi jumps in front of a moving car, which kills him instantly, leaving his body trapped in the space between a wheel and the bottom of the car. Extra fact: Yamaguchi, when the town reaches the point of the hurricanes, will revive with a spring from the car in the place where his legs should be; only to try to reach Kirie and try to take her with him (although in the end, the spring will end up separating from him and fall to the ground, disturbing Shuichi and Kirie alike).

Mitsuru's appearance

Mitsuru is shorter than most of the other people (probably due to his younger age), though still taller than Kirie, with very large blue eyes and short, messy black hair. He is usually seen wearing his school uniform and with an enthusiastic expression on his face.

Mitsuru's Personality

Mitsuru is a very hyperactive, headstrong, and seemingly conceited boy who enjoys jumping on people and scaring and/or surprising them, especially when there are "people" there, referring to Kirie Goshima, whom he is quite obsessed with. He is also quite optimistic, insistently believing that things will work out in his favor even when all evidence presented says they won't.

Keiko Nakayama, datos

Age: 34 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Status: Pregnant, not yet affected by mosquitoes. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Keiko's appearance

Keiko is taller than many of the other characters (possibly due to being older), has long, straight black hair, light or dark colored eyes, and appears to wear lipstick. When Keiko is cursed, her irises and pupils will appear to shrink, leaving most of her eyes white, and she will usually be shown covered in blood.

Keiko's personality

Keiko seems like a normal woman, but she quickly shows a certain strangeness towards mosquitoes. When she has been bitten by a mosquito, she will be overcome by a thirst for blood at night, parading around the hospital with the other pregnant women and drinking the blood of the doctors and other patients. As a result, she will help massacre several people. By day, she will seem to have no memory of what happened; either that is what she does, or she is a very talented actress (like the other women).

Kazunori Nishiki, datos

Kazunori's Apparel

Kazunori has short black hair with bangs that extend to both sides of his face and has a youthful face with small features.

Kazunori's personality

Kazunori seems somewhat depressed, probably due to his extreme poverty and the feud between his family and the Endos, which causes him to be constantly beaten and forced to stay away from Yoriko Endo. He wants to dedicate his life to Yoriko, with whom he is madly in love.

Yoriko Endo, datos

Age: 18 years old. Gender: Female. Sexual orientation: Heterosexual. Species: Human. Place of birth: Kurôzu-Cho. Residence: Kurôzu-Cho. Relationships: Mr. Endo (father), Mrs. Endo (mother), Kazunori Nishiki (lover). Death: While trying to escape from their parents, Endo and Nishiki end up entangled with each other like mating snakes so that they cannot be separated, loving each other until the end as if their souls had been predestined to be together, despite the circumstances.

Yoriko's appearance

Yoriko is a cute, pale-skinned girl with straight black hair that reaches mid-back, styled in a hime cut, brown eyes with pronounced eyelids, and a small, delicate face.

Yoriko's personality

Yoriko has a very similar mindset to Kazunori Nishiki, who also wishes to break free from his controlling parents. She displays the same naivety as Kazunori, expressing the same desires to run away with him. She resists her family's wishes and will fight against her father's restrictions even if it is fruitless. Yoriko is deeply in love with Kazunori and is willing to abandon her life with her family to commit to being with him forever.
