The main characters of the series, Sam (Samantha Simpson), Alex (Alexandra Vasquez) and Clover (Clover Ewing), are fourteen years old in the first season and are freshmen at Beverly Hills High School. They were born with spy skills, but initially, they did not know each other, becoming friends thanks to their espionage. Each had a certain reputation: Sam was known as the smartest girl in school, Clover as the one who knew the most about fashion and Alex as the best athlete. Before becoming spies, they lived their lives as ordinary teenagers, but after that, their lives changed radically. Sam is a redhead, Clover is blonde, and Alex is brunette – and is the shortest of the three. Their personality traits are: Sam is the leader, calm, kind, intelligent, and strategic; Clover is the fashion fanatic, loves boys, parties, and shopping; Alex is funny, sporty, and cheerful. Although they are similar in some ways, their personality differences often get in the way of their friendship, especially in relation to Clover. Every team needs someone who is "more down to earth" so they don't fall into any traps. Sam plays this fundamental role in the trio, she is the most intellectual, rational and logical. When the spies get into trouble, the redhead is the one who makes the most practical decisions. Alex sometimes gets in trouble for being naive and the most inexperienced of the spies.
