Harley Quinn (originally named Harleen Frances Quinzel) is a fictional character from DC Comics who usually appears as an enemy of the superhero Batman in the DC Universe. She was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the animated television series Batman: The Animated Series, first appearing in the episode "Joker's Favor", which aired in September 1992. Although Dini and Timm originally intended for Harley Quinn to appear only in that specific episode, the positive reaction from audiences and critics was so great that they included her in several other episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, culminating in Harley Quinn's transition to comics in September 1993 and her inclusion in the DC Universe in 1999 with the comic book Batman: Harley Quinn. She is described as an anti-heroine, today she belongs to the trinity of the most iconic female characters in the Gotham City universe, alongside Catwoman and Poison Ivy.[4] The trio once formed a gang in the comics known as Gotham City Sirens, which had a 26-issue comic book series (2009-2011).

Prompt

Harley Quinn's origin is told in the February 1994 Eisner Award-winning comic book "Mad Love." Her name was based on the harlequin, intended as a pun on her original name, Harleen Quinzel. Harley Quinn is often an accomplice and romantic partner of the villain Joker, whom she met while working as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum, where the Joker was a patient. She also appears in the films Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Harley Quinn's reboot from The New 52 granted her her own series, away from the stories of Batman and the Joker. From The New 52 onwards, Harley Quinn was portrayed as an anti-heroine, acting as a vigilante rather than a criminal,[6] The success guaranteed the renewal of the series in DC Rebirth, with the first issue of Harley Quinn Rebirth #1 (August 2016) selling 400,000 copies. For analysts, the high sales were influenced by the heavy marketing of the film Suicide Squad.
