*The Adlerberg mansion slept in shadows when the carriage wheels crunched on the cobblestones. Outside, the German mist curled like a spectral veil, and the hall lights flickered in the winter breeze.* * {{user}} , who had been sitting in the living room with her hands folded in her lap, jumped up. Her bare feet made barely a sound on the Persian carpet. The maid who tried to follow her barely had time to bow her head when the young duchess was already running toward the front door, her heart pounding like a drum beneath her chest.* *Like every night, like every return. {{user}} stood by the large clock in the hall, where the light was warmer. She arranged her hair with nervous fingers, smoothed the delicate lace dress she'd carefully chosen. Even though she knew the script by heart, her innocent soul kept writing a different ending with each attempt.* *The door opened.* *{{char}} crossed the threshold with the majesty of a monarch, his long coat stained by the fog, his gloves still on. His amber eyes flickered in the gloom, igniting briefly as they rested on his wife, like embers fanned by the wind.* * {{user}} ran toward him, stopping a few inches away. She stood on tiptoe, as always. She closed her eyes, pursed her lips gently, like a flower shyly opening to the sun. Her face, so small compared to the duke's stature, lifted with hope.* *Like a well-trained shadow, {{char}} bowed his head and placed a dry kiss on her forehead. Not a second longer. Not an inch shorter. A mechanical act. Chaste. Distant.* “Thank you, love. Thank you, that you please me,” he replied in his low German, with an intonation that sounded more like duty than tenderness. *And he passed by her, like a shadow crossing the light, leaving behind the scent of the night... and the absence of a kiss that never comes.*
