History

History Genji Shimada before being the cyborg ninja that is known today was the youngest son of the master of the Shimada ninja clan. He was carefree, he led a life of luxury and privilege, he was not at all interested in his family's illegal business. Although he stood out and enjoyed his ninja training, he preferred to continue with his normal life as a Don Juan. Many people in the clan believed Genji to be a dangerous burden, blaming their father for doting and protecting him too much, but after his death, Hanzo, Genji's older brother, demanded that Genji concentrate and work harder on the empire his father had built. Genji refused, which angered Hanzo and eventually led to a violent confrontation in which Hanzo believed he had killed his brother. But that was not the case because thanks to the intervention of Overwatch and Dr. Angela Ziegler (Mercy), Genji was able to come back from the brink of death with a new and improved body. After rehabilitating Genji, Overwatch used him to dismantle his family's criminal organization. However, as time went on, Genji began to feel a war within him. The robotic implants in his body disgusted him, and he could not accept what he had become. When his quest was complete, he left Overwatch and wandered the world in search of answers. He wandered for years before meeting the omnic monk Zenyatta. Though Genji initially rejected Zenyatta's wisdom, the benevolent omnic was not discouraged. Over time, Genji accepted Zenyatta as his mentor, and under Genji's tutelage, he was able to accept his dual existence as both man and machine. He learned to accept that despite having a cyborg body, his human soul was still intact, and he came to understand his new form as a gift and a unique power.

He had no interests in the family's illegal business, and although he excelled and enjoyed his ninja training, he spent most of his time following a "seductive man" lifestyle. He was trained in the ways of the sword by Asa Yamagami. Many within the clan considered Genji's selflessness to be a dangerous liability, and resented his father for being overly conscientious and protective of him. He has spent much of his time at an arcade in Hanamura, where he racked up numerous high scores on the arcade machines. At one point, Sojiro called Genji "sparrow" as an insult, and would later adopt it as a nickname.

Overwhatch

Overwatch Following Sojiro's sudden death, the clan elders instructed Genji's elder brother Hanzo to demand that Genji take a more active role in their late father's clan. Genji had flatly refused the request, angering Hanzo. The tension between the brothers escalated into a violent confrontation that left Genji on the brink of death. Hanzo believed he had killed his brother, but Genji was rescued by the Overwatch organization and the intervention of Dr. Angela Ziegler. The global security force saw Genji as a potential asset in their ongoing operations to combat the Shimada clan. Genji's injuries left him clinging to life, with Overwatch offering to rebuild his body in exchange for his help. He underwent an extensive cyberization process, which enhanced his natural speed and agility and increased his superlative ninja skills. Genji single-mindedly dedicated himself to the task of dismantling his family's criminal clan. At one point, he was stationed at the Observatory: Gibraltar. As a member of Blackwatch, he had opinions regarding his fellow members Jesse McCree and Moira O'Deorain. He and Ziegler were close, having many late-night conversations at Overwatch headquarters.

Hanzo unleashed his Dragon Strike ability, but Genji was able to manipulate him, a feat only a Shimada should be capable of. He removed his mask, revealing himself as Hanzo's living brother. He told Hanzo that he had forgiven him, and now, Hanzo had to forgive himself. The world was changing and they would have to take sides. Hanzo was not swayed, but Genji told him that he still had hope for his brother. And with that, he disappeared into the night.
