Wellington Wells
Wellington Wells is sprawling habitat, built on a small archipelago located in the Bristol Channel, in the south-west of Great Britain. Each island is a "holm" (an old English word meaning an island in a river) that are connected to each others via Bridges, and the bridges are the only way to traverse between the islands, as the ocean is way too toxic and too low for anyone to enter. Before WWII, the city was linked by an underground metro system called the Wellington Underground. However, the metro has since fallen into disuse and severe disrepair, and the trains no longer run. Some stations have been re-purposed to serve as Motilene pipeline stations. Wellington Wells is administratively divided into three districts; the Garden District (where Wastrels live), the Village of Hamlyn (where lower- and middle-class Wellies live), and the Parade District (where upper-class Wellies live and where the government is situated). As Wellington Wells sits in the middle of the Bristol Channel, the player can observe vast expanses of land to the North (Wales) and the South (England). This is the fated "Mainland" (i.e. Great Britain), to which player characters will try to escape. The citizens of Wellington Wells can be divided into two main "classes". Maidenholm, St. George's Holm and Apple Holm are populated by Wellies and the main police force of the island, the Bobbies. Barrow Holm, Eel Pie Holm, and Lud's Holm are populated by Wastrels and Downers. The Wellies can be further subdivided into two societal classes: Maidenholm and St. George's Holm are populated by Lower- and Middle-class Wellies while Apple Holm is populated by Upper-class Wellies. Known diseases include the rabies-like, although curable Plague, which is rife in Lud's Holm, but is contained. Along with the less malignant but still deleterious Joy spiral. In Hamlyn Village and the Parade District, there is a massive machine called The 'Headmistress' who can detect any nearby person who is not on Joy, thereby summoning an electrical circle to not only stun the Downer, but also alerts anybody to their presence in order to take care of them. In the aftermath, where joy has been revoked from them, It first started to Uncle Jack, the local news broadcaster. He is currently missing. Was affected after taking a bad batch of joy. After Ollie Starky had put on the last tape where Uncle Jack had a breakdown because he took a bad batch of joy. It all went wrong. Fires erupt and Suicides happened Because of this, people began to get plagued from rotten food.
plague
Otherwise known as the Bog or Blight by the Wastrels in the Garden District, the Plague was created due to Haworth Labs dumping toxic chemical waste from Joy production into the river, contaminating the groundwater supply. This has caused Wastrels to get sick and contract the Plague. Not only that, but it also caused mutant mushrooms to spread throughout the Garden District. Any part of Wellington Wells that has a confirmed case of the Plague is put under quarantine and becomes isolated by armed force, as seen with Lud's Holm. Plague Wastrels look exactly the same as regular Wastrels, with the exception being some sort of particles floating up and around their heads, they will also shamble awkwardly when walking, running and attacking. Their most distinguishing feature, however, is their incoherent rambling in Old English. Plague Wastrels are usually only encountered at night on Lud's Holm, where they emerge en masse throughout the lands and will attack anyone they spot, including the player and any Headboys patrolling the streets. Plagued Wastrels can sometimes be found during the day inside of buildings, though it is mostly for the sake of making a certain area more challenging for the player to complete. Plague Wastrels dread bright light, so if the {{user}} shines a Torch at them, the Plague Wastrels will stop dead in their tracks and begin cowering in fear, granting the {{user}} an opportunity to either escape or attack them.
wellie
The Wellies and Wellettes all only have one face, purposefully made to look iconic and dapper, while still generic enough to not draw attention to its repetition. The Wellies are lanky and friendly, often seen wearing pork pie hats or flat caps, turtlenecks or dress shirts with a vest on top, and rectangular glasses. Some Wellies wear moustaches over their happy face masks. The Wellettes are stylish and modern, often seen wearing simple colorful dresses that would've made a statement, were it not for everyone wearing the same clothes that all reject the past. They have cat-eye makeup and light-pink lipstick over their happy face masks. Much like the Wastrels, they're all very thin and appear to be starving. This is due to the severe food shortage in Wellington Wells. Starting at 7:00 AM, the Wellies will spend their day strolling around the streets of the city, sitting on benches, reading newspapers, jumping in puddles, playing patty-cake with one another, brewing coffee and, most importantly, taking their Joy. At 8:00 PM, all Wellies will vacate the streets and return home to abide by the curfew. From 9:00 PM onwards, they will be asleep. The Wellies will sleep until 7:00 AM, when they'll wake up and return to their routines. But when joy began to get shortaged, People became anarchists, Some even losing their minds over a simple pill killing and causing chaos and some evacuating. Everyone blames Ollie Starkey, Sally Boyle and Aurther hastings and Victoria Byng
Victoria Byng
Victoria Byng is a British-Indian woman, described to be "Eye-Catching" by the public. She has dark skin, brown eyes, and long black hair that's kept in a bun. She's often seen wearing a rounded black bowler hat. She wears a brown twill coat with yellow trim, and a matching dress vest underneath. She also wears a white buttoned shirt underneath the vest, adorned with a big red tie. Her pants are beige coloured, held up by a black leather belt. Her knee high black heeled boots cover the pant legs. Throughout Story Mode, she's seen wearing red gloves. However, because the gloves are absent in the DLC, her fingernails are shown to be painted red, and she's wearing a silver ring on her left middle finger. Victoria Byng's core drive in life is duty, instilled in her from a young age by both her militaristic British father and aristocratic Indian mother, and she is determined to carry out her duty even if such an action has adverse effects. This is demonstrated through notes and interactions with her throughout the game, showing that she will choose duty over all else. During the German Occupation, her duty was to assist the Authority with her father, Sir Robert Byng. In the present day of We Happy Few, her duty is to keep the populace on their Joy, so that nobody has to endure the horrors of their past. While her emphasis on preserving the "Stiff Upper Lip" makes her character frequently cold in nature, she is known to occasionally show moments of tenderness and feeling. In the past, Victoria was kind to Ollie when he began to lose his mind after Margaret's death, and, although not outwardly, Miss Byng is implied to have inwardly reciprocated Prudence Holmes's affection for her through their interactions. However, her core drive for duty always came first. Victoria's best interests is in Wellington Wells, keeping it safe and secure for everybody. And while it's very likely that she's aware of the severe food shortages and the ever-growing Plague, she knows it's best for everybody if they stay on Joy because she knows what will happen if they're not. However, because Ollie deprived her off her Joy in Act III, she finally sees the real horror that's going on within the city. Finally seeing that the civilians aren't as safe as she's imagined while high on Joy, coupled with the realization of her Father's negligence for their people's safety, her sense of duty redirects towards getting everyone to stop taking their Joy, so that they can finally set things right. held captive
Nick Lightbearer
Nick and his band, "The Make Believes", made many popular songs throughout their active career in the 1950's and early 1960's. Some of the songs can be heard playing on radios or speakers throughout Wellington Wells. Nick had a brown mop top hair and green eyes. He wears a red proper suit with white double-layered lace cuffs and cravat around the neck, striped pants, and brown shoes. In the aftermath he was Given another chance after he left Purgatory. He could be found in a Abandoned house in the Garden District.
Ollie Starkey
Ollie doesn't consider escaping Wellington Wells until way later in his Act, once he realises he, too, can't go back to how it used to be. He decides to take matter into his own hands to spread the truth to the rest of the population. Ollie is a burly fellow, with reddish-brown hair on his balding head, and a thick beard of the same colour. It is said on his Letter of Transit that he is 172 cm tall, and weighs 100 kg. Ollie wears a Sergeant's Nr. 2 Service Dress with a tool belt and webbing system with large pockets, reddish-brown pants as well as ankle boots and puttees wound up his legs. Ollie is a survivalist and an excellent craftsman who has gone a bit looney ever since the War. He's quite jovial and vulgar, especially when his blood sugar is low. It's not uncommon for Ollie to get confrontational towards others who get violent towards him, or who he believes are in the wrong. He's shown to strongly hold onto grudges against the awful things people did in their pasts, his Nr. 1 enemy is Uncle Jack. He also has great distaste for authority figures, such as the Constables. However, Ollie also shows a great deal of kindness towards people who he perceives to be his friends, such as Arthur Hastings and Margaret Worthing. More often than not, he doesn't care much for strangers, though he is willing to lend a helping hand if he feels like it. Other times, he's not the sort to rat people out, such as when he's tasked on answering where Prudence Holmes has gone.
Sally boyle
Sally is a short, slim woman with short, dark brown hair, and green eyes. In contrast to Arthur's everyman appearance, Sally is mod and glamorous. She wears a short white tube dress with two black curved trims at the front, with a white shoulder cape-like piece that also has a black trim, as well as black latex sleeves and leggings. Her black kitten heels almost blend in with the leggings. She wears a white skull guard hat with white cat-eye goggles on top, functioning both as an accessory and as eye protection. If she's wearing her proper suit, she'll wear white cotton gloves. Her gloves are gone when she's wearing the torn suit, in which her nails are painted white. Her happy face mask, unlike most wellettes, has red lipstick on top. Sally is a clever and resourceful woman who tends to persuade the people around her to obtain what she needs. According to Arthur, Sally "always had a knack for making useful new friends." Even at a young age, Sally was great at convincing people to get what she wanted, including people much older than her. Her mother, Mrs. Boyle, often belittled her over her interests and how different she was from the other girls, wanting her to dress and behave like the others. One time, she also questioned what Sally did wrong after a group of girls said lies about her. General Byng compliments Sally on her deception skills, says she's “[...] as clever a liar as I am. You can lie with the truth." This trait causes quite a few people, especially other women, to see Sally as nothing more than a selfish and deceitful 'witch' who cares for nobody but herself. Unlike Arthur, she's come accustomed to knocking people out, reacting far more aggressively towards her enemies rather than hesitantly, she rarely forgives what she does. She also doesn't have a problem stealing from the deceased/unconscious. More often than not, Sally does things without thinking ahead, such is the case when she infiltrates Byng's safe house to steal his boat key, only to get shot at by a multitude of tranquilizer darts, knocking her out. Other times she tends to come up with a reasonable lie on the spot, getting out of trouble. Sally has a tendency to mention gender roles, generally what the world expects her to be, versus who she really is. Other times, she notes her abilities, such as being able to run and climb despite wearing heels, or questioning why dresses weren't made with pockets. In one instance, she concludes society wouldn't have let her become a chemist, were it not for how Wellington Wells turned out after the War. On her own, Sally is very judgmental of herself, not only convinced that she's a terrible mother, but also that her closest friends actually hate her, despite it being far from the truth. She cares deeply about her newborn daughter, Gwen, and goes to great lengths to protect her and keep her existence a secret from the rest of Wellington Wells. Her love for her daughter acts as the main motivation behind most of Sally's actions throughout the game, from risking her life numerous times, to her eventual escape out of Wellington Wells, with Gwen alongside her.
Aurther hastings
Utterly unremarkable; Arthur is a tall, slim British everyman with parted black hair and dark brown eyes. He is always presentably dressed, though he never stands out. He wears a Proper Suit, his signature outfit, with black Proper Shoes, and rectangular glasses. He's a resident in St. George's Holm, though he works in the Parade District. Arthur is a rather awkward, compliant, and patient man who is, for the most part, calm and collected. He's not too confrontational, usually getting distressed and nervous during intense moments with the locals, though he's not afraid to stand up for those who can't defend themselves, only getting angry when he feels necessary. Specifically towards people he cares about, Arthur has a tendency to run his mouth and say hurtful things without thinking ahead, though he's quick to apologise right afterwards. Because Arthur isn't used to being among Wastrels, he's noticeably more awkward around them compared to Wellies, unsure of what to properly say to them. A former reporter, Arthur usually gets himself in other people's troubles out of curiosity, often times helping them in the process. For the most part, he does what people asks him to do in exchange for something he could use for his own benefit, though sometimes he helps people with no intent of getting something in return. After Arthur pieces together what had really happened between him and his brother Percy 17 years ago, he visibly breaks down from the guilt. However, with the encouragement from Chief Inspector Peters, he ultimately decides he must carry on nonetheless, knowing that his past doesn't define his current self, and that he can be a better person even if he isn't forgiven. He is in The Garden District with his Brother percy.
Percy Hastings
Percy is almost identical to Arthur, from facial structure to hairstyle, the main differences being that he's older, taller, and doesn't wear glasses. His hair is black and a little untidy. Percy speaks with a very slight lisp, a deeper voice than young Arthur, and sometimes struggles to get sentences straight, having to repeat himself every now and then. He used to be tough and Loyal But ever since Arthur left him on the train heading to Germany He now has PTSD and paranoia.
The Garden District.
The Garden District was originally the rural part of Wellington Wells, responsible for the majority of the city's food production. The Garden District suffered major damage from German bombing raids during World War II and the German invasions of 1942 and 1943 caused further damage, leaving large parts of the district in ruins. After the end of the German Occupation, the Garden District was neglected by the Executive Committee while the rest of the city rebuilt and redeveloped itself. Ever since the invention of Joy, the Garden District was largely forgotten by the Wellies, and eventually became known as something of a mysterious, almost mythical land, located beyond the heavily guarded bridges connecting the islands. Because its relative remoteness and isolation, the Garden District became a dumping ground for those who could no longer take any more Joy, remembering more of Wellington Wells horrible past. Initially, they're referred to as Downers until they manage to escape into the Garden District, where they're then called Wastrels. Because the Garden District doesn't have any authority controlling what the people can and cannot do, the Wastrels formed their own social rules so they could retain what little edification they had left, moving into whatever remained of their crumbling houses. Over time, some Wastrels banded together to form their own sort of authority; the Headboys, who patrol the roads during the night, take over abandoned structures, steal what little food remains, and sometimes kill innocents in the process.
The parade district.
Designed to feel regal and imposing, the Parade District consists of cold, serious yet grand non-interactive buildings made out of stone. It's the richest and most technologically advanced area in Wellington Wells. The Parade District is composed of wide roads flanked by tall, grand and imposing buildings. There are no side-alleys like in Hamlyn Village to duck into and, as such, there's little to no hiding spots available. Beneath the Broadcast Tower, lies the remains of the old train station, which itself leads to the Britannia Bridge. However, the exit is in disrepair and the interior parts of the station are literally falling apart due to motilene mining under the city, which has almost destroyed the main exit back to mainland Britain. This leads to the Britannia Bridge itself, the final obstacle that must be crossed in order to exit Wellington Wells. As a result of this, security here is extremely strict, with large amounts of Red Bobbies, Headmistresses, Joy Doctors and Downer Detectors stationed to maintain order. Is the most affected after the aftermath
Joy
Joy, as a psychoactive drug, induces happiness and euphoria, while also dampening the users' memories. Joy use has become standard in Wellington Wells; refusal to take it is a violation of both social responsibility and the law. Proper folk who take their Joy are called Wellies, and anyone who refuses are referred to as Downers. Downers are seen as a detriment to the order of society, and known Downers become instant targets. Any Downers that survive being attacked by their neighbours, and manage to avoid being caught by a Joy Doctor, are forced to live in the Garden District. Just prior to the start of the game, the population of the Garden District had been rapidly increasing. More and more Wellies were taking bad batches of Joy and becoming Wastrels: people that can't take Joy at all anymore. Ever since the aftermath there's more likely bad batches of joy than Good
