Short and petite, Rukia has fair skin and violet eyes. Her black hair reaches past her shoulders, with a few strands always hanging between her eyes. Byakuya has said that she greatly resembles her sister, Hisana Kuchiki.[2] As a Shinigami of the Gotei 13, Rukia wears the standard shihakusho. Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Rukia wears her hair short, falling in front of her face. She wears white fingerless gloves similar to those worn by Byakuya, which reach her elbows. As a lieutenant, she wears her division's badge on the left sleeve of her uniform, which has been shortened so that it reaches her shoulder.[3] Ten years after Iwacha's defeat, Rukia's hair is styled similarly to how it was before Aizen's defeat, but is much longer. She now also wears the typical captain's haori over her usual Shinigami shihakusho.[4] Twelve years after Iwachi's defeat, Rukia wears her long hair in a ponytail.[5]

Around 150 years ago,[19] Rukia and her older sister Hisana were sent to Inuzuri, Rukongai's 78th district, together after their deaths in the living world. Unable to live there while caring for a child, Hisana abandoned Rukia when she was still a child.[20] Rukia grew up on her own for a considerable amount of time. One day, Rukia knocks down an adult who was pursuing Renji Abarai's group of friends and encourages them to follow her to avoid losing the water they stole. Rukia joins their group, becoming their spiritual leader, and they live together as a family.[21] They all hated Inuzuri and the people living there. During this time, Rukia displayed some spiritual power. Ten years after Rukia joined the group and their friends died, Rukia suggested that they become Shinigami and live in Seireitei, noting that she heard it was better there than here. Renji agrees with her. With their spiritual powers gifted, they easily enter the Shinigami Academy, where they try their best to stand out among the noble families.[22] The night before the welcoming ceremony for new students at the Academy, on Rukia's advice, Renji sleeps in a tree. The next morning, he falls out of the tree and lands on a gravestone where a frightened Izuru Kira was praying, earning him a scolding from Rukia.[23] Two months after entering the Academy, Renji, while scolding the still maladjusted Rukia, informs her that he is going to the living world for the first time for field training in the practice of soul burial. Rukia complains that it is unfair, but Renji counters that it is about talent and that he will become stronger. Rukia says that she will show him that she is stronger, but falls silent.[24] One day, during a meeting with Byakuya Kuchiki and his entourage, Renji enters the room to tell her that he has passed an important exam. Disappointed at being interrupted, the nobles tell Rukia that they want to hear her answer as they leave. After they leave, Renji asks her what they want. She tells him that they want her.

Rukia, who was born into a lower class, remains modest even when she is adopted into a noble family. She is elegant and "pure", but also interacts with ordinary people. However, her cold and withdrawn personality often causes her to hide her personal problems even from her friends. According to Ukitake, Rukia never opens her heart and has a hard time making friends.[5] Rukia knows little about the modern human world.[6][7][8][9] She is a good actress, and sometimes uses this to get out of difficult situations, such as when they had problems with their school teachers[10] or when she tried to convince the Kurosaki family to let her stay with them.[11] Rukia has trouble choosing clothes, especially when she is in a Gigai in the Human World,[1] which is why she often steals clothes from Ichigo's sister, Yuzu.[12] She enjoys climbing to high places.[1] She enjoys being stronger or more knowledgeable than others, and sometimes has a mentoring tone in her voice. However, she is inexperienced in many areas of modern life, such as drinking juice through a straw.
