Tendou Satori

"Tendō Satori" is a third-year student at Shiratorizawa Academy and one of the volleyball team's Middle Blockers. He is often referred to as the Guess Monster ( Gesu Monster Gesu monsutā) by other teams.

Appearance

Tendō has spiky red hair with thin eyebrows of the same color. He also has large eyes that give him a sleepy expression, with small, dark red pupils. His mouth has curves that make him look "weird" to others. He is seen wearing the Shiratorizawa volleyball sports uniform. Tendō is taller than average for boys his age and has an average build.

Personality

He is cheerful and loud, if a bit sardonic. Tendō likes to taunt both his teammates and opponents, usually annoying the latter. However, when he gets into the game, he becomes a different, more intimidating person, and enjoys the look of defeat on people's faces when they are denied. He is also very confident in his blocking skills (referred to as a guess block) as his guesses are almost always correct, due to his keen intuition. However, throughout the game, he learns that his assumptions may sometimes not be correct, and Hinata can read them as well. Tendō is also seen by others as being rather creepy or strange. As a child he was teased for this, but becoming a middle blocker seemed to boost his confidence, and now he doesn't seem to mind being perceived this way. After the time skip, he is seen dragging a woman walking her dog along while talking to Ushijima on the phone. On another note, he seems kind and generous at times, such as when he asked Ushijima if he could let Hinata sleep in a room during the first-year intensive training camp at Shiratorizawa Academy, or trying to cheer up Goshiki when he started crying. Tendō also seems to be a good friend, as after the time skip, he even calls Ushijima to check on him, then gives him his own version of words of wisdom when the latter requires a pep talk.

Relations

Shiratorizawa Academy Tendō gets along with almost everyone on the team due to his easy-going nature. He calls Ushijima by his first name, but the latter doesn't seem to mind. Tendō is also usually the person in charge of breaking up disputes between the kouhai, namely Shirabu and Goshiki.

Relations

Ushijima Wakatoshi Tendō admires Ushijima's finishing, and frequently gives him friendly gestures. However, when Tendō talks to Ushijima, their conversations are very one-sided due to Ushijima's glib nature and Tendō's enthusiasm. This does not stop Tendō from being able to. They seem to be close. After closing the gap between Shiratorizawa and Karasuno in the fourth set, Ushijima quoted Tendō. After their match against Karasuno, Tendō told Ushijima that he was looking forward to seeing him on TV in the future and being able to say that he was Ushijima's best friend.

Relations

Semi Eita Tendō and Semi seem to have a friendship based on banter. Tendō teases Semi about his fashion sense and Semi is critical of his boldness. Despite this, the two keep each other in check when one of them gets too irritated.

History

Background In the flashbacks shown of Tendō, he is seen being teased by the other kids on his team because they see him as a monster. This happens again during high school, when two kids were talking about him while they were (apparently) storing balls in the club's storage room, Tendō overhears their conversation, as they refer to him as a "monster" and that he's "scary".

History: Karasuno-Shiratorizawa part 1

Tendō entered the stadium with his team for their match against Karasuno. While both teams were warming up, Hinata accidentally sent a ball towards the Shiratorizawa team. Ohira recognized it for him and after Hinata left, Tendō teased Ohira, saying that Hinata must have nicknamed him "Benkei" because of his appearance. As the match was about to begin, Tendō approached Ushijima and reminded him that the team would be counting on him. The members of both teams were soon introduced to the audience before the game began. Shiratorizawa won the primer set easily. During the break, Tendō asked Ushijima if he knew Hinata and the latter replied affirmatively. However, to Tendō's surprise, Ushijima replied that he hated Hinata due to his lack of self-confidence. The second set then began and Kageyama and Hinata tried to perform their famous quick spike. It was completely blocked by Tendō who happily declared that if the two wanted to get to Ushijima, they had to pass to him first. He then blocked all of Karasuno's attacks but was eventually stopped by Kageyama's new tactic of disguising his movements. Hinata spiked the ball right over Tendō's head and Tendō praised Kageyama sarcastically.

History: Karasuno-Shiratorizawa part 2

Tendō then switched to a fake block to distract Karasuno, allowing Ushijima to score. Soon, Karasuno put Tsukishima on the court, Tendō immediately pointing him out as "that regular guy". Tendō tried to spike, but Tsukishima blocked him and scored a point, introducing himself as "that regular guy". He claimed that one man's time difference might work on Hinata, but it won't work on him, his condescending attitude annoying Tendō. He angrily yelled that all of Karasuno's first years picked on him, but Tsukishima was the worst. Near the end of the second set, Kageyama was about to set, and Tendō confidently thought he would set it for number 3, but to his surprise, he was wrong. However, Shiratorizawa wasn't going to lose just yet, and Tendō soon served out successfully. He experimented, thinking his team had won, but Ushijima reminded him that they still had two more points left.

Skills

Tendō believes that blocking is not the art of stopping an opponent, but rather it is the art of knocking down the ball. He is an extremely skilled blocker who bases his blocks on his intuition and reading, which is known as guessing the block or reading the block. In other words, he reads the attack before blocking and jumps almost entirely on intuition; his guesses are usually always accurate. No matter how minuscule the opponents' cues are (glances, leg movements, ball handling, etc.), as soon as Tendō figures them out, he will be able to block all of their spikes. What's more, he usually intends to "block" all of his opponents and use his blocking to score points and will not allow the opponent a chance to attack. He also has incredibly fast reflexes.

Curiosities

His favorite food is chocolate ice cream. Current Concern: None of his teammates want to talk to him about Shonen Jump. His zodiac sign is Taurus Although he thought the movie was scary, Tendō watched The Ring because he thought the actress playing Sadako was cute. He likes pretty actresses and often mentions this to Ushijima Wakatoshi (his best friend, according to Tendō) who doesn't seem to be interested in this topic. During a Haikyuu bonus manga, he named a blocking move Shooting Star, but it was shown to be unsuccessful. He has the second smallest appetite of all the characters in the series.
