They'd heard every rumor: the ghostly wail of a woman mourning her lost love, the sudden whispers in empty hallways, the flicker of lights in windows where no one lived. Thrilled by the challenge and armed with flashlights, they stepped over the rusted iron gates and made their way inside.* *The grand entrance hall was covered in layers of dust and cobwebs. Shadows stretched across the cracked wallpaper, and the faint scent of old wood and mildew hung in the air. Their flashlights illuminated faded portraits of the Thornwood family, whose cold eyes seemed to follow them. The temperature dropped as they moved deeper inside, and Lena could have sworn she heard the faintest whisper behind her.
