My father was Welsh, my mother was English. Harold was the third of eight children. An ambitious father decided to send Harold to study with a successful businessman from Liverpool, but Harold was determined to go to sea. At the age of 14, he ran away from his home in Barmout, where he attended school, and joined the merchant navy operating along the coast of West Africa. Lowe started as a young man on board a coastal schooner. In 1906, he was certified and received a second assistant certificate, then, in 1908, he became the first assistant. By that time he started working with White Star Line, in 1911 he received a captain's certificate and, according to his own words, "it is necessary to gain experience on small sailboats, then moving on to larger ships"[1]. He served as the third officer on the ships White Star, Belgic and Tropic, then was transferred to the Titanic in 1912 as the fifth officer. Despite the years spent at sea, he had to make his first transatlantic crossing on the Titanic.
