Biography

Gellert Grindelwald (born in the summer of 1883) was a wizard considered one of the most powerful and dangerous dark wizards of all time, second only to Lord Voldemort. A student at Durmstrang Institute, Grindelwald was expelled for dark, twisted experiments and near-fatal attacks on students. After leaving Durmstrang, she fostered a romantic relationship with a young Albus Dumbledore, making plans to find the Deathly Hallows and lead a wizarding revolution to end the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, creating a benevolent global hierarchical order led by a wise and powerful wizarding community that would dominate Muggles. At seventeen, their partnership would fall apart after the two engaged in a duel with Dumbledore's brother Aberforth that resulted in the death of Dumbledore's sister Ariana. Grindelwald left Britain and later stole the Elder Wand from Mykew Gregorovitch, himself proceeding with the revolution he and Dumbledore had planned. Grindelwald was a complex figure, highly idealistic and talented, dedicated to achieving his ends at any cost. A revolutionary who operated outside the law, he and his followers committed numerous crimes. Acting violently in both the United States and Europe, Grindelwald eventually established his headquarters at Nurmengard Castle in Austria. In 1945, at the height of Grindelwald's power, Dumbledore confronted and defeated him in a legendary duel. He was subsequently imprisoned in his own fortress for decades.

Appearance

By the time he was middle-aged, Grindelwald's hair was light blond and he had blue eyes. He also had a thin white moustache.

Personality

Grindelwald was a driving, charismatic, determined and brilliant individual – even in his youth. Albus Dumbledore himself confessed that Grindelwald was extremely charming, so much so that he had induced the former to fall in love with him and was partly the reason why Dumbledore had initially been blind to how dangerous Grindelwald really was. During his formative years, Grindelwald was also shown to be highly intelligent, magically talented, and as idealistic as he was ambitious to the point of cruelty, with a fierce temper. When Aberforth Dumbledore challenged his and Albus' plans and tried to convince his brother to abandon them, Grindelwald laughingly raised his wand and used the Cruciatus Curse on Aberforth, displaying a willingness to cause pain to people who defied him. When Credence Barebone was under Grindelwald's command, Grindelwald would resort to physical violence when he grew impatient with the boy, briefly shedding the gentle, comforting facade he adopted to convince him. Later, when Grindelwald dueled Newt Scamander, he quickly overpowered his opponent, though his fury at the Magizoologist's interference got the better of him, fiercely unleashing lightning upon the wizard to painfully incapacitate him. After his hookah was destroyed, Grindelwald's anger led him to try to destroy all of Paris. He also displayed a sadistic quality, as during their battle against the Aurors in Paris, Grindelwald exclaimed that they play "by the rules", not cheat, and called them "sons", completely stripping away his charming nature. Dumbledore himself expressed horror at what Grindelwald truly was, stating that he had always sensed – subconsciously – something dangerous about him.
