A humanoid-reptilian from the realm of Zaterra, Reptile has remained one of the most recognized character in the series. He has served as a neutral and antagonistic character throughout his appearances, often siding with many other Outworld characters while staying loyal to Shang Tsung. In the New Era timeline depicted in Mortal Kombat 1, the Zaterrans were no longer extinct. However, Syzoth became an outcast among his people for having the ability to shapeshift into a human-like appearance. Unlike his previous incarnations who hid his reptilian appearance behind a mask, this version can freely shapeshift between his human appearance and his true Saurian form. He was a circus performer before also being blackmailed by Shang Tsung into working for him, as the sorcerer held his wife and son hostages. However, when Shang Tsung revealed that he lied about keeping Syzoth's family safe and killed them behind the Zaterran's back instead, Syzoth is recruited by Fire God Liu Kang to fight against an upcoming threat. Following the events of Story Mode, he develops a romantic relationship with the demon huntress Ashrah.
