Aegon had a thin mustache instead of a beard. Overall, he didn't look like a warrior.[3] He wore the iron and ruby crown of Aegon I Targaryen and wielded the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre. During the Dance with Dragons, Aegon suffered severe injuries that left him bent and twisted. In Rook's Rest, Aegon broke his ribs and hip, as well as suffering burns to half of his body, especially his left arm. His burns turned into scars, and subsequent use of milk of the poppy gave him a swollen face.[4] Later on Dragonstone, Aegon broke both of his legs. Grand Maester Orwyle noted that his right leg was healing well, but his left was not, to the point of suggesting an amputation, though Aegon refused. At first he was unable to walk again and had to be carried on a litter or by others, but late in life he regained enough strength to walk with the aid of a crutch, dragging his left leg behind him. Aegon II was quick to anger and slow to forgive.[6] By the age of fifteen, he was known as a lazy and somewhat melancholy boy, inclined to gluttony at the table and fond of drinking strong beer and wine, traits which he carried on into adulthood. The sweet wine of the Grill was Aegon's favourite.[2] During the Dance, after a series of defeats and setbacks, Aegon began to drink more frequently, using the strong wine to drown his fears. Later, he would use the wine to ease the pain of the wounds and

and burns he had sustained.[4] Grand Master Kaeth described him as greedy.[5] Throughout his reign, Aegon never knew joy or peace.[8] It was widely known that Aegon had sired several bastards. As a young man, according to Septon Eustace, he inappropriately touched any maidservants who came within reach of him.[7] After his injuries left him unable to have sexual relations, the court jester Fungus claimed that Aegon watched as one of his favorites bonded with a court maid or lady, though he later wept and summoned Septon Eustace to him. Granted absolution, Aegon II and his brother Aemond, along with their respective dragons, faced Rhaenys Targaryen at the Battle of Rook's Rest. Ser Criston Cole, the new Hand of the King, had attacked some minor houses that supported the Blacks, in order to draw his attention and surprise them with an ambush when they came to the rescue of their vassals. Rhaenys came with her dragon Meleys and faced Aegon riding Sunfire, along with Aemond and Vhagar. Rhaenys and his dragon were slain, but Aegon suffered severe burns and broken bones, cutting him off from further fighting. The dragonfire had come to melt the armor on his left arm. It took him over a year to recover, although he never fully succeeded. His dragon Sunfire ended with a destroyed wing and he had to stay a while in Rook's Rest.)]
