Kyojuro Rengoku was born into the family of the Flame Pillar Shinjuro Rengoku. As children, Kyojuro and his younger brother Senjuro were trained by their father in the art of swordsmanship so that they could follow in his footsteps and become demon hunters. At an unknown time when Kyojuro was still young, his mother Ruka gave him final instructions to protect the weak whenever possible and not to use his power for selfish purposes. After Ruka's death, Kyojuro's father began drinking and soon resigned as Flame Pillar and stopped training his sons. Keizo decided to take Hakuji under his wing so that he could look after Koyuki, Keizo's sick daughter, after her previous caretaker (her mother) drowned as a result of stress. Hakuji eventually looked after Koyuki until, three years later, she was in good health and able to stand up and do housework. Additionally, he also trained as Keizo's apprentice in the Soryu style, which healed his soul. Eventually, Keizo asked Hakuji to take over the dojo and become Koyuki's husband, which he agreed to.
