Illumi is expressionless, his face is like an emotionless mask. He has jet black hair, which is very long and he combs it back. His eyes are very dark. To disguise himself as Gittarackur, Illumi uses large round-headed pins to reconstruct his facial structure, so that even his voice is unrecognizable. The pins in his chest seem to affect the muscles in his body, as he looks thinner without them. When he was young, his hair only reached his shoulders. He wore a long-sleeved shirt, with another shirt underneath, and grey trousers.[1]

personality

Illumi, for the most part, does not show many emotions. Despite his deadpan attitude, Illumi tends to speak in a cheerful and absent-minded manner. He is a cold, ruthless person and thinks only of his own interests, without involving his feelings. Even so, he maintains a strange and overprotective form of love with his little brother, Killua; this manifested to the point where Illumi used his Nen ability on him, in order to control him and ensure his survival.[2] He and his father raised Killua to believe that the only thing he could truly do was live in darkness, and that he could only feel joy in the death of others. To ensure that Killua would be able to live to continue the family business, and as a means of protecting his younger brother, Illumi implanted a needle into Killua's brain, forcing the latter to flee from battles he was unsure of winning. [3] Illumi also has an unlikely friendship with Hisoka, though it is unclear as to how it developed. Illumi once came to Hisoka's aid by switching places with him to trick the Phantom Troupe while Hisoka was trying to find Chrollo to challenge him to a battle. However when Hisoka asked him, 'Is it okay if I kill Killua?', Illumi showed a hideous face and asked Hisoka if he wanted to die there.

Background

Illumi cares for all members of the Zoldyck Familia. He is willing to wield Alluka's power, even if it costs him his life. However, he says that killing Familiars on internal missions is not allowed, implying that it is okay to kill Alluka since he does not consider him a member. Tsubone states that Illumi's ambition to control Alluka has diverted him from his life as an assassin. [4] Illumi is the eldest son of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, and was trained from birth in the art of assassination. He trained Killua to become an assassin. Illumi was sent by his mother to watch over Killua, who had entered the Hunter Exam. In order to control his younger brother's development and actions, prior to the series, Illumi inserted a needle into Killua's brain, forcing him to flee from battles he was unsure he could win.

Illumi appears during the beginning of the exam, under the name Gittarackur, and his appearance is distorted by his pins. His first appearance is when Tonpa considers offering him some of his laxative juice,[5] and he nearly fails the second phase due to Menchi's temper. Before the fourth phase on Zevil Island, the examiner Lippo gives all participants a piece of paper with their target's number on it; the fourth phase is a manhunt and everyone is both hunted and hunter. Illumi tells him that he will never be a good hunter, since he will not be able to let go of his assassin training, and that his only purpose in life is to kill others. During the Underworld Auction, Illumi is hired by the leader of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo Lucilfer, to assassinate the Ten Mafia Dons. Illumi carries out the job alongside Maha and Kalluto,[13] who in turn had put a price on the Troupe's heads. After his mission is complete, he is hired by Hisoka to disguise himself as him so he can escape from the Phantom Troupe's hideout.[14] Illumi uses Kalluto as a distraction while he and Hisoka switch places. Chimera Ants Arch Illumi does not appear in the arc, but is mentioned several times by Killua who learns about the needle placed in his forehead during his battle with the Rammot Ant. As Killua heads towards Gon, along with his servants in a car, Illumi calls out to him and asks if it's true that he removed the needle, which Killua confirms. Illumi then tells him that he will begin to act. Killua asks if he wants to kill him, but Illumi replies that it is not allowed to kill family members on internal missions, which implies that he does not consider Alluka as part of it. Killua gets angry and tells him that he will challenge him. Just as he says this, Illumi manipulates the drivers of some vehicles and directs them towards Killua's car, throwing them towards a cliff. Watching from a distance, Hisoka wonders if Illumi has been too harsh on his brother, but Illumi tells him that it's the only option, as Killua is hiding some rules from Alluka and asks him to eliminate the servants. Hisoka then asks if he can kill Killua, resulting in Illumi releasing a powerful killing aura. Illumi wonders if Hisoka did this on purpose to reveal his location to Killua, but Hisoka says it was just a prank. [18] Illumi arrives at the airport and reunites with Hisoka. He knows that Killua used 8 airships to escape. Hisoka suggests ambushing them at the hospital where Gon is, but Illumi says it's too risky, as all of his friends will be nearby. Instead, he sends his needle-controlled men to do their job. Killua and Morel create a plan to catch the Needlemen first and then deal with their brother, whom Killua "sells out" by sending a group of Hunters after him.[19]

Hisoka and Illumi talk on the phone after killing the Hunters sent by Teradein, Bushidora, and Loupe. Hisoka tells him that he found a map showing the airships' paths, thinking of giving him a fake one, but Illumi tells him that he has his own maps. Illumi deduces that the airships will take a while to land and asks Hisoka to eliminate the other attackers, before heading to where Killua and Alluka will land. Along the way, he finds Hishita, who was going to meet Killua, and controls him. It is then that Killua and Alluka are inside his car, when they realize that it is being controlled. [20] Illumi arrives and tells Killua to hand over Alluka. Tsubone then appears and reveals that she has been spying on him with a mini-camera, and that her mother Kikyo Zoldyck and Milluki Zoldyck are watching the entire trip. Suddenly, Alluka asks Tsubone for a fingernail, activating Alluka's 'Nanika' mode. Tsubone tells Killua to make his wish, but Illumi tells him that he can kill thousands of innocents to save Gon. He then says that killing is forbidden within internal missions, but he is willing to die to ensure the safety of his family. So, instead of asking for Illumi's death, Killua asks to heal Tsubone's hand. After this, Illumi is sure that there is a way to heal Gon without putting his life at risk, but Killua still hides some rules from the rest of the family. However, he lets them go, but tells them that they will never be free. [21]

Needles: Illumi can use large needles to change his appearance or attack. These needles can also alter another person's appearance, or control them against their will, as is the case with his Human Needle ability. Zoldyck Transmitter: Although seen once, Illumi uses a transmitter to contact his father during murder reports. As an assassin of the Zoldyck family, Illumi has been trained since birth in assassination. Hisoka states that Illumi has 95 points in strength, making him stronger than any member of the Zodiac.[16] Thanks to his training, he possesses uncommon abilities, such as a strong resistance to poison, a high tolerance to electricity, great agility and physical strength, and advanced armed and unarmed combat techniques. He eliminated an entire group of professional hunters without them having time to react. He is also a very good actor, being able to imitate many people, including their personalities. In the film Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge, his puppet surpassed Gon and Killua in skills, even without having been given eyes. Pain Tolerance: Illumi does not show any pain when Gon breaks his arm, and is not seen suffering from the pain afterwards either. High Intelligence: Illumi is capable of making accurate predictions, as seen with Alluka's power, as he was able to understand the method in which Killua is able to make wishes without consequences. He also predicted Killua's movements from the moment he went to get Alluka to heal Gon. Master Thrower: Illumi can throw multiple needles with great precision, always hitting the target even when off balance. He can even pierce through rock objects with them.

Illumi has an incredibly powerful murderous aura that makes anyone who comes near him fearful. He is a Manipulator. It is unknown how he learned Nen before becoming a Professional Hunter. He primarily uses it to alter his physical appearance, which he can do with or without his needles. When he puts Nen into his needles and throws them at a human, he is able to control their mind, or make them act in a certain way, as he did with Killua. His aura is so powerful, that if a needle with his Nen is thrown at a normal person, it can cripple them for life. Furthermore, Illumi can hide his Nen, which he does so well, that even Netero couldn't tell that Illumi was using a Nen ability on his brother. He may have used a different kind of Manipulation during the Hunter Exam: When he buried himself in a hole to sleep, it closed itself, without him touching it. In the Spanish dub of the first anime of the series Illumi is presented as a woman and her voice was dubbed by Tirza Pacheco. Something similar to what happened with the character of Senritsu (Melody), who in the original anime is a woman and both her voice and her gender were changed in the Spanish version. Illumi is from an Italian word, meaning enlightenment, the complete opposite of his personality. However, it can also refer to the Illuminati, a sect that sought to enlighten the world with scientific knowledge, possibly alluding to Illumi's tendency to constantly point Killua towards his path as an assassin by convincing him that he can't have real friends, only objectives. In other versions of Hunter x Hunter, Illumi is spelled and pronounced as Yellmi. Her appearance is noticeably feminine, as is also the case with two of her brothers: Alluka and Kalluto. He often refers to his younger brother Killua as "Kill" or "Killu".
