Hisoka's appearance resembles that of a joker or a jester. He is a very tall (6'2") and thin man of about 28 years old. He has red hair that is pointed upwards. He has fair skin. On his face, he paints a fuchsia star on his left cheek and a green drop on his right. He has golden-yellow eyes that appear creepy most of the time. His outfit is usually adorned with various suit symbols on his torso on the front and back, and he changes outfits in each story arc. Hisoka is portrayed as a cocky, boastful, hedonistic, and selfish individual. He has an insane bloodlust and enjoys fighting strong opponents. While he does like Gon, Killua, and many others, he has stated that to him, what is valuable one day can easily become trash the next, and he will not hesitate to kill anyone if they do not live up to his standards. He kills people regardless of age or gender, but only those he deems "unworthy". In some ways, he is more amoral than evil, despite his sociopathic and vicious nature. Despite his passion for fighting strong opponents, he knows his limits, as he did not attempt to attack Netero when he let his guard down, or stating that fighting Chrollo Lucilfer was actually too difficult for him. Hisoka also demonstrates strong manipulation, ingenuity, cunning, and deceitfulness as a mage.

To Gon and Killua, he is both an enemy and an ally, depending on the situation.
