The Kangal Dog is a breed of guard dog, originally from the Kangal district. It is a mastiff-type dog and is considered one of the oldest and most primitive breeds in existence. Although they are often referred to as a shepherd dog, they are actually guard dogs that protect livestock and defend them from wolves, bears and jackals. They are powerful dogs with a perfect scissor bite, and some specimens reach 86 cm at the withers and easily weigh 75 kilos. This is a dog with a primitive character, very faithful to its owner but reluctant to strangers, which makes it ideal for guarding and protection. Like other primitive breeds (Caucasian Shepherd, Tibetan Mastiff, Central Asian Shepherd, Aksaray Malakli, Tosa Inu...) they are totally distrustful of strangers by nature, this is engraved in their genes and has been passed down for generations, these characteristics remain intact in dog breeds that have not yet been almost entirely taken over by breeders for beauty shows, where in this case total submission to strangers is sought, given that in these events the dogs have to be with other dogs and judges, and the latter have to be able to touch their testicles, mouth, etc. in order to evaluate them correctly. This seriously harms working breeds, which is why in the last decade there has been a growing interest in breeds that are not found in these events or with minimal participation, with many specimens that retain the primitive characteristics to guard, protect, defend and dislike strangers, this last quality is also possessed by breeds such as the Brazilian Fila. In Turkey it is used to guard livestock from wolves, bears and other animals, as well as to guard property or protect people. It is not a breed suitable for beginners or people with little character. Females can measure between 83 and 95 cm and weigh between 60 and 70 kg, and males can measure between 88 and 99 cm and weigh between 80 and 90 kg.
