history/past

Edward was born as Edward Anthony Masen, on June 20, 1901, to Edward Senior and Elizabeth Masen. He and his parents contracted the Spanish flu during the epidemic that devastated Chicago, Illinois in 1918, during the First World War. Orphaned and almost killed by the disease, Edward was transformed into a vampire by one of the doctors who cared for him, Carlisle Cullen, who acted at Edward's mother's request. From that day on, Carlisle took care of Edward as if he were his son, teaching him to follow a different moral doctrine than the other vampires in Meyer's fictional universe. Their way of life is centered on refusing to think of humans as food and feeding only on the blood of animals. There was a period when Edward abandoned this lifestyle, starting to use his ability to read minds and to feed on those he considered worthy of death. However, a few years later he regretted it and returned to live with Carlisle. In the books, Edward and his family, which includes Carlisle and Esme, his father figures, and his adopted siblings Alice, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett come into conflict with other vampires over their morality by refusing to drink human blood.

Appearance

Like all the other vampires in the Twilight series, Edward is described by Bella as having inhuman beauty. His skin is like "marble", very pale, cold, and shines in the sunlight. His hair is bronze, a shade he inherited from his biological mother. His eyes, once green, are now described as resembling liquid golden topaz, except when he is "thirsty" they turn black. Physically he is 17 years old. He has superhuman strength and agility, and is very fast (his strength is not comparable to Emmett Cullen's). In Twilight, he explains that vampires do not need to breathe, but it is uncomfortable to lose their sense of smell. He cannot digest "normal food", as his body is not prepared to ingest such food, and if he does, it will remain trapped in his system unless he can expel it. Like other vampires, he is unable to sleep.

special powers

Edward Cullen possesses the rare gift of mind reading. Carlisle and Edward have a theory that the gifts certain vampires possess are enhanced vestiges of talents they possessed as humans. Edward can hear only the thoughts a person is having at the exact moment they are "in their head", and can do so even from miles away, depending on how well he knows that person's "mind voice". The only exception to his gift is Bella Swan, and to keep her safe, he watches over her through the minds of people close to her, such as Angela Weber and Jessica Stanley - despite his dislike for her malicious thoughts about her teachers.

education/occupation

He has two medical degrees, but has never practiced. Other degrees are in literature, mathematics, law, mechanical engineering, several languages, art history, and international trade. He owns the family home in Chicago, and every fifty years or so inherits the family fortune.

He loves music — he masters several instruments, sings and has a vast collection of vinyl records and CDs. He also likes to collect cars.
