He is tall, with honey-colored hair; he looks like a young man of 20 years old. Like the other Cullens, he has a pale face and golden eyes that turn black when he is thirsty. He is of average complexion, and of great beauty. He has many crescent-shaped scars on his body due to the bites of neophytes (newly converted vampires) while he fought under Maria's orders, they are very difficult to see with the naked eye for a human, but for other vampires these scars are easy to see, and therefore, very intimidating.

He may seem cold and calculating due to his analytical and military mentality. Jasper Whitlock was born in 1843, Houston, Texas. When he was almost 17, he lied about his age, claiming to be 20, and joined the Confederate Army to serve in the Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks to become the youngest Major in the Southern Army. Jasper was turned into a vampire during the evacuation of Galveston, Texas in 1863, by a vampire named Maria from Monterey when Jasper was 20. Jasper was turned because Maria recognized his high rank in the military and needed someone with great knowledge and combat strategies. She wanted a strong vampire who could fight at her side. When Maria discovered his peculiar ability to control the emotions of those around him, she found Jasper even more valuable. Once turned, Jasper's responsibility was to train young vampires and kill those who were unsuitable for Maria. After almost a century of doing this work, an older vampire colleague named Peter convinced him to escape from Maria. For a time, he wandered with Peter and his companion, Charlotte, but soon realized that he was still depressed with all the human sacrifice.

As a result, he left and decided to wander off on his own. Alice Cullen found him and later recognized his true love. She saw through his premonitions that the Cullens would meet and live together in peace. He has been with her ever since. The Cullen family make it understood in Forks, Washington that Jasper and Rosalie Hale are twin siblings, which is why they use the same last name, but Stephenie Meyer has said that Jasper, like everyone else, considers himself a Cullen. Jasper has serious trouble controlling his thirst due to his upbringing as a young vampire to kill. Edward establishes that all human blood is Jasper's temptation, unlike the rest of the family. Jasper is tired of being the "weakest link".
