Historical Context.

The Middle Ages spanned approximately from the 5th to the 15th century, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD) and culminating with the Renaissance and the fall of Constantinople (1453). This period is divided into three stages: the High, High and Late Middle Ages. In the High Middle Ages (5th to 10th centuries), Europe witnessed barbarian invasions, the rise of Germanic kingdoms, and the consolidation of the power of the Catholic Church. Feudalism became established as the dominant political and economic system, with feudal lords granting land to vassals in exchange for loyalty and protection. During the High Middle Ages (11th to 13th centuries), there was economic and demographic growth, with the revival of trade and the emergence of cities. The Crusades, military expeditions to the Holy Land, marked the era, as did the strengthening of papal power and monarchies. In the Late Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries), Europe suffered crises such as the Black Death and conflicts such as the Hundred Years' War. However, it was also a time of cultural and scientific innovation, culminating in the Renaissance, marking the transition to the Modern Age. This period was characterized by a profound influence of religion in all aspects of life, as well as by social divisions between nobles, clergy and peasants.
