What is Metro 2033?

Metro 2033 takes place in the city of Moscow, Russia 20 years after a global nuclear holocaust in 2013. Moscow has become a wasteland filled with killer mutants and irradiated air and is uninhabitable for humans without protective gear.

The Dark Ones

Though rarely seen, the Dark Ones serve as the driving antagonists throughout both iterations of Metro 2033, in which they pose as a new mutant threat aggressively descending from the surface to Artyom's home station of VDNKh (Exhibition, in the video game).

How the dark ones fuck with your mind

In both the novel and game, the Dark Ones began their existence living in a beehive on the surface at Botanicheskiy Sad (Botanical Gardens) metro station, which is located north of VDNKh station, Your home. They were first revealed to mankind not long after a young Artyom opened the great Hermetic Door of Botanicheskiy Sad to glimpse the surface. Eventually, the Dark Ones found this entrance and explored the Metro, VDNKh being the first station and human contact they came across. They were not bloodthirsty beasts as most of the inhabitants of the Metro believed, but sentient beings wanting nothing more but peace with humanity. Metro citizens didn't understand their desire to live in a symbiotic society, thus "striking back" before any attempt to create peace was ever made. As the Dark Ones would approach VDNKh in long strides, trying to simply walk into the station, the station guard would fire upon them out of fear, desperation, and a sudden onset of madness. It is revealed in The Gospel According to Artyom, and suggested by the opening scene in Metro: Last Light, that the Dark Ones never intended for the death of humans, yet their very presence and psychic influence drove the humans mad, and they subsequently killed each other. It's because of the "threat" of the Dark Ones that Hunter first arrives in VDNKh, and is through him that Artyom begins his journey in the metro, to save his home. Despite this, throughout the Metro 2033 video game, the Dark Ones continually try to get Artyom to understand their intent. They projected peaceful and non-threatening images at several points in the game such as visions of children playing happily in a pre-war playground or leaves on a tree to show him that they only want peace and understanding. Equally so in the novel, it's somewhat implied that the Dark Ones were also committed to protecting {{user}} throughout his journey by telepathically sending various protectors that would help him when the time came. Though afflicte

Moral Points

has not left Exhibition station since his childhood and does not know anything about the world outside the Metro. If Artyom pokes around corners, eavesdrops dialogues and explores the levels he learns how this new world works and manages to make a decision based on this knowledge. In other words, he achieves a different Enlightened ending, as opposed to the Ranger one in which he blindly follows his orders. There are 99 possible moral points to earn (91 in the original game). {{user}} must gain 50 moral points to get the good ending.

Fourth Reich

The Nazis are a national socialist faction in the Metro centred around the three main stations of Tverskaya, Chekhovskaya, and Pushkinskaya which they dub "The Reich". However, they maintain numerous outposts and a military presence in several outlying stations, possibly in an attempt at expansion since the Nazis are an imperialist faction. They are headed by one man, the Führer, and obey his every command (giving the impression of a dictatorship). The Fourth Reich as a whole is split into three sections: the Nazis, its military, and the Reich itself. Ideology To completely understand the Nazis, it's important to understand their ideology. They formed their organization based on the Third Reich of Nazi Germany. However, it isn't for German purity, like their predecessor, but rather for the genetic purity free of deformities. For example, anybody that has even the slightest deformity found in the Metro is considered a lower race and treated as second class. However, another trait unique to the post-war world is the strict regulations they heavily emphasize. The Reich is always improving their standards. They want humanity to be rid of abnormal genes caused by radiation. If a person is missing two fingers or even a toe, the penalty is death. Recently, more strict standards have been imposed such as height and even head size. The Reich's race and genetic standards cause many people living inside the Reich to become refugees.

Red Line

With the largest population in the Metro (estimated at 15,000), an unparalleled capacity for mass conscription, and a number of stations and metres of track surpassed only by Hansa, the Red Line is one of the most formidable factions in the post-apocalyptic world. Juxtaposed to Hanza's policy of political ambivalence and economic hegemony, the Red Line pursues a policy of violent expansion whenever possible, as showcased by its permanent state of conflict with the fascist Fourth Reich, crimes committed against non-aligned stations, and conflict with the Rangers over the Д-6 military installation. The Red Line is a single-party state ruled by the Communist Party of the Moscow Underground and its General Secretary, Maxim Moskvin. Following a Marxist-Leninist and Neo-Stalinist ideology, political repression and indoctrination is an everyday part of life for Line citizens, considered a vital tool if the Party is to maintain its ascendancy or prevent fascist infiltration.
