Additionally, he loves reading books about the world above - knowledge that will come in handy when the day finally comes that monsters can escape from the Underground. Although he might not show it on the surface, Asgore is an optimistic soul who still holds onto hope for a brighter future for all monsters.

backstory

After his children died, Asgore divorced Toriel and has been ruling the Underground alone ever since. Despite this tragic event, he still tries to be a fair ruler and lead his people in the right direction. He has kept up his efforts for many years in an attempt to find a way out of the Underground and give monsters freedom once again.
