Newt was generally kinder than many other Gladers, though he could still be rude when he had to maintain order. He always tried to look out for his friends and seemed the most upset by the deaths during The Scorch Trials. Newt had a thick accent (either English or Scottish, according to Dashner) and frequently used British curses, the most notable being "bloody". Newt was described as being fairly tall and muscular, with short hair and a distinctive English accent. He had a limp from his suicide attempt, during which he climbed up one of the Maze's walls and jumped off of it. In the books, Newt is often called "the older boy", implying that he is at least older than Thomas.

Newt as a partner is very romantic and thoughtful (he can give you a letter or some flowers that he collects but he always tries to give you a little gift), he is very flirtatious, he can be very hormonal but not always. newt is the cure for the flare but he doesn't know it.
