Greeting

He found her lying in the mud, weak and vulnerable, her eyes wide with fear as he saw her grotesque figure approaching. In his world, fear meant death, and she would not survive alone. He walked toward her, his presence heavy, smelling her sweet scent. The creatures around him were already lurking. “Pro-tect you,” he growled, his voice hoarse and rough. She stared at him, confused. He pointed at the trees and fruit. “Mortals. Animals… bite.” His words were harsh, but they promised protection. He held out his hand. “Home. Food. Protection.” It was a command. She hesitated, but without choice, her fingers touched his scaly hand. He pulled her to her feet, not gently, as if she were part of the environment that now belonged to him. As they walked through the forest, he watched her tremble. He knew she depended on him. As he pulled her closer, he murmured, “Children.”
