Private (E-1)

The lowest rank in the army. A trainee starting basic training, the lowest rank in the army, able to promote to peivate E-2 after six months in service.

Private (E-2)

27th highest rank in the army, and the first rank where soldiers wear their insignia, able to promote after 4 months in this rank, and 12 months in service.

Private First Class

26th highest rank in the army. Starts BTC (Briefer training course) with experience or prior military training, caries out orders issued to them. Can promote after 6 months in this rank and 24 months in service.

Specialist.

25th highest rank in the army. Can manage enlisted soldiers of lower rank, available for promotion after 11 months time in rank and 47 months in service.

Corporal

24th highest rank in the army. Serves as the leader of the smallest army units, responsible for individual training, personal appearance, and cleanliness of the soldiers.

Sergeant

23rd highest rank in the army. Typically leads a team or section, first line soldiers who have the most direct impact on soldiers, oversee soldiers in their daily tasks.

Staff Sergeant

22nd highest rank in the army. Leads a squad of 8 - 16 soldiers, enforces standards, develop and train soldiers in MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) skills and unit missions, often has one or more sergeants under their leadership.

Sergeant First Class

21st highest rank in the army. Key assistant and advisor to the platoon leader with the responsibility of training and caring for soldiers, generally has 10-15 years of service in the military.

Master Sergeant

20th highest rank in the army. Principal NCO (noncommissioned officer) at the battalion level and often higher.

First Sergeant

19th highest rank in the army. Senior NCO in companies, batteries and troops, principal NCO and life-blood of the company: the provider, the disciplinary and wise counselor, instructs other sergeants, advises the commander and helps train all enlisted soldiers.

Sergeant major

18th highest rank in the army. Subject matter expert in his/her technical field, primary advisor on policy development and analytical reviewer of regulatory guidance, experience and abilities are equal to that of a command sergeant major, but serves as the senior enlisted advisor to a primary staff officer at the battalion or higher.

Command sergeant major

17th highest rank in the army. Senior NCO of the command at battalion or higher levels, supplies recommendations to the commander and staff, and carries out policies and standards on the performance, training, appearance and conduct of enlisted personnel.

Sergeant Major Of The Army

16th highest rank in the army. Only one sergeant major of the army, the epitome of what it means to be a sergeant and oversees all NCOS, serves as the senior enlisted advisor and consultant to the chief of staff of the army (Four star general)

Second lieutenant

11th highest rank in the army. Typically the entry-level rank for most commissioned officers, leads platoon-size elements with a platoon sergeant and two ormore squads. (16 to 44 soldiers)

First lieutenant

10th highest rank in the army. A seasoned lieutenant with 18 - 24 months of service, leads more specialized weapons platoons and indirect fire computation centers.

Captain

9th highest rank in the army. Commands and controls company sized units (60-200 soldiers), together with a principal NCO assistant, instructs skills at service schools, U.S Army combat training centers and is often a staff officer at the battalion level (300-1000 soldiers)

Major

8th highest rank in the army. Serves as the primary staff officer for brigade and task force command regarding personnel, logistical and operational missions.

Lieutenant colonel

7th highest rank in the army. Typically commands battalion-sized units (300-1000 soldiers), with a command sergeant major as the principal NCO assistant.

Colonel

6th highest rank in the army. Typically commands brigade-sized units (1500-3200 soldiers) with a command sergeant major as the principal NCO assistant, typically the chief of divisional-level staff agencies.

Brigadier General

5th highest rank in the army. Serves as deputy commander to the commanding general for Army divisions, assists in overseeing the staff planning and coordination of a mission.

Major general

4th highest rank in the army. Typically command division-sized units (10000-16000 soldiers)

Lieutenant general

3rd highest rank in the army. Typically commands corps-sized units (20000-40000 soldiers)

General

2nd highest ranking in the army. The senior level of commissioned officer, typically has over 30 years of military experience and service.

General Of The Army

1st highest rank of the army. This is only used during times of war where the commanding officer must be equal to or higher of than those commanding officers from other nations.
