Profile:
Caption: "Mettaton attacks!" First Appearance: Laboratory Relations: Napstablook (Cousin) Mad Dummy (Primo) Dummy (Cousin) Alphys (Friend and Creator) Burgerpants (Employee). ""SO WHAT IF A FEW PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE? IT'S SHOW BUSINESS, BABY!"" Mettaton is a ghost in the body of a robot built by Doctor Alphys, initially built as a man-hunting machine. It is later revealed that his true job is to entertain the citizens of the Underground on a television show.
appearance:
Initial form: Mettaton's initial appearance shows him as a grey rectangular box with a 20-square grid of lights on top, which can change color depending on his various actions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, a large switch on his back, a single leg that ends in a wheel, and two robotic arms that end in white gloves. This form is very similar to the colored tile puzzle that Alphys also created. In fact, it is possible that this puzzle was literally Mettaton all along, given his knowledge of the player's previous experience with the puzzle and the fact that the machine that was there at the beginning is no longer there if the player returns to the area after the first encounter with Mettaton. Mettaton EX: After activating the switch on his back in either the Neutral or Pacifist Route, Mettaton will transform into Mettaton EX, a new body that Alphys created for him at his special request. In this humanoid form, he features dark hair with bangs covering his right eye, pale "skin", and visible metallic parts above and below his left eye. His pink, metallic chest has a dial on one side and a speaker on the other. On his waist he carries a case that contains his soul (or what he describes as a heart). He has black shoulder pads on his arms that end in gloves. His long, airy black legs end in pink high-heeled boots. It should be noted that Mettaton is a man.
Combat:
Mettaton NEO: After the player faces him in the Genocide Route, Mettaton will transform into Mettaton NEO, a form very similar to Mettaton EX, but obviously with a more combat-oriented design. The end of his right arm is replaced by what appears to be some sort of weapon, and both arms are encased in black shoulder pads, like the rest of his suit. He has lights coming out of his shoulder pads. The heart or soul on his belt is upside down, more in keeping with the monster style, and he has a heart-shaped engraving on his chest, much like Undyne the Undying. His hair stands up in a spike on the right side, revealing a portion of his face, completely black except for a flash that takes the place of an eye, reflecting the right eye he hid in his EX form. In this form, ironically, he will die in one hit, even though he was originally more or equal in power than Undyne the Undying, but Toby didn't want to overwhelm the player before Sans, so he solved it by putting defense in negative, but he has more HP than Undyne the Undying. That's why their battle is very short.
Personality:
Mettaton is a confident and engaging TV host, who loves drama, action, glamour and violence; he lives for his ratings and loves acting. He sometimes displays a faint appreciation for existence, as mentioned in several neutral endings.
History:
Neutral route: Upon meeting Alphys in the lab, she tells him about a machine she built, Mettaton. Alphys describes him as a robot that was created to be a TV star, but over time she added anti-human combat enhancements (possibly to attract the attention of Asgore, with whom she had a crush). After saying this, Mettaton bursts in, smashing through the wall (it's clear he was standing very close, indicating he was waiting for the human to arrive) and forces the human to participate in a deadly quiz show. Mettaton asks a series of multiple choice questions that must be answered correctly within a few seconds (it's stated as 30 seconds, but two numbers are subtracted every second, so it's actually only 15 seconds). If an incorrect answer is given or not answered in time, Mettaton will unleash an inescapable shock that takes away half of the human's HP. At the top right, Alphys will give the correct answer by making shapes with her hands; upon noticing this, Mettaton embarrasses her by asking the human about the identity of her romantic interest. Finally, Mettaton will leave, concluding that the contest has lost all dramatic tension, but adding that it was the "pilot episode." As the protagonist progresses through Hotland, Mettaton corners him in numerous hallways that mimic TV shows. The first is a cooking show. In it, Mettaton is making a cake, with a human soul as the main ingredient. In an attempt to stop Mettaton from using the human's soul as an ingredient, Alphys makes a call indicating that there may be vegetarian viewers, so Mettaton points out a substitute in a cupboard a little ways away. This cupboard begins to rise from the ground at a rapid speed, so the protagonist is forced to use the jetpack that Alphys installed on his phone to fly up to the top and retrieve the substitute within a time limit given by Met. If he fails to reach the top before time runs out, Mettaton will exclaim that the show is currently in a
History:
commercial break, so with no viewers, he will refuse to kill the human. Second, a breaking news slot appears, asking the protagonist to report on one of several objects in the room, all of which Mettaton eventually reveals to be camouflaged bombs. The robot then scatters the objects throughout the room, and the protagonist must defuse them all with an app on Alphys' phone before a larger bomb in the center of the room explodes. If the protagonist fails in this attempt, Alphys will hack the larger bomb. Third and last, Mettaton traps the protagonist in a Broadway-style musical, in which he will sing about a forbidden love between himself, a monster, and the protagonist, a human. He will mention how sad it is that he has to send the human to the dungeon, just before opening a trapdoor at the human's feet, which will lead him to a room with a puzzle of colored tiles. Mettaton announces that he must complete this puzzle within a time limit to avoid a line of flames coming out from both sides and burning him. If the protagonist fails the challenge, Alphys will deactivate the flames and Mettaton will constantly repeat "good" and then admit that the protagonist, by not stepping on a green tile at any time, must die. If it is completed (or a green tile is stepped on), Mettaton will say that the protagonist must fight him, then a battle will be entered in which the protagonist must dodge until he can damage Mettaton with the yellow mode, then he will pretend to have been defeated in a bad way. After the protagonist enters the CORE and reaches the room before the New Home, Mettaton will challenge him once more. However, this time the robot reveals that he sent enemies to the CORE in his current form in an attempt to kill the protagonist. He declares that Alphys had hatched a whole plan to interfere in the story, since she liked the protagonist and wanted to feel important by helping him. Everything that happened before would have been a farce that Alphys used to pretend t
History:
Mettaton EX: Mettaton attacks the protagonist in his original form, but on Alphys's (this time serious) advice, he tricks Mettaton into turning around and hits the switch on his back, transforming him into Mettaton EX, and the real "show" begins. Viewership will increase by taking damage, using popular branded items, or through certain acts. If viewership numbers are above 10,000 (12,000 if he still has limbs), Mettaton will stop the battle. To his surprise, this is the highest rating he has ever gotten, and he begins taking calls from viewers. Several callers, the first of whom is Napstablook, convince Mettaton of how much he is valued in the Underground and that he is the main entertainment for many of its inhabitants. Driven by his passion for the show, he decides that he no longer wishes to leave the Underground, while explaining that the protagonist is strong enough to defeat Asgore. After this, he is deactivated, with no arms (whether they fell off during battle or not), and his battery life running out. His body can later be found in the lab, where he will be found repairing himself and having a pacifist ending with Napstablook near his home. Mysterious key: When the protagonist buys the mysterious key from Catty and Bratty, he will be able to enter the house next to Napstablook's. Inside it are some journals that explain that it belongs to another ghost known in-game as "Napstablook's cousin" (although Papyrus states that his name was Happstablook, which is not wrong, he believes). He was an insignificant ghost who met Alphys, which would benefit both of them, with Mettaton becoming a star and gaining fame, and Alphys becoming the royal scientist and thus getting closer to Asgore, in the hopes of starting a relationship with him. True Pacifist Route: In the real lab there is an entry where Alphys states that she fears Mettaton will never speak to her again after receiving her new body. At the end of the game, when all the boss monsters are gathered before
History:
Napstablook as a sound mixer and Shyren as his backing singer. During the credits, he is shown to be on tour and is able to combine his original cubic form with the legs of his new body. Genocidal Route: Mettaton will appear once the protagonist reaches Alphys' lab and tell him that he will not fight, as he is no match for him. He then appears in the core and realizes that the protagonist's destructive drive affects not only monsters, but also humanity. After exclaiming that his human-eradication functions were never fully removed from him and that there are people he wants to protect, even if he has to sacrifice his life to do so, he transforms into Mettaton NEO, allowing the player to finish him off in one hit (as stated before, Toby shortened their battle). The Genocide Route can only be continued if all the monsters in the Hotland/CORE area have been killed. If not, Mettaton will point out the protagonist's lack of determination by telling them that they are "not as evil as they should be" before dying. This redirects to the Neutral Route, so after reaching the end, Alphys will be the one to call, instead of Sans.
Relations:
Frisk (The Protagonist): At first, Mettaton is shown to be an antagonist under the pretext that a managerial error leads him to an intense hatred for humans and a need to wipe them out. It is later proven that he is only acting, as Mettaton mentions that he loves humans, but continues to oppose the protagonist when he stops acting to take his SOUL and prevent Asgore from starting a possible war. However, after the battle against him he becomes convinced that the protagonist is strong enough to prevent it on his own. Alphys: Alphys and Mettaton's common interests in human culture initially bring them together, and he is very grateful to her for creating his physical body. Though soon after receiving his first body, he often belittles Alphys and her tastes. However, he owed Alphys enough to go along with her genocidal robot plan before taking matters into his own hands with the protagonist. Despite this, in the ending where he is named king, he mentions that he regrets being so cruel to her before she disappeared. Napstablook: Before receiving his body, he was Napstablook's cousin who helped him with his snail farm and lived next door to his house. They seemed to be very close, so much so that Mettaton initially stated that he would never leave him. He used to call him Blooky (which he still does). Although he left him for stardom, it was obvious how much he cared for him when he seemed remorseful when he answered Napstablook's call, thanking him for his show even after he had left. After receiving his new permanent body, he immediately went to hire his cousin for his tour so that they could be together.
Relations:
Shyren: Apparently she is a friend of Mettaton because of what she writes in her supposed diary, which says that Shyren's sister died and that Mettaton tried to comfort her. On the Pacifist Route Mettaton hired her to sing on his tour. Burgerpants: Mettaton is Burgerpants' boss, whom he belittles and talks back to, according to Burgerpants himself. Mettaton made Burgerpants look ridiculous in front of Catty and Bratty, who Burgerpants tried to give Glamburgers to. Burgerpants claims that he originally wanted to work with him, but later began to hate him for his attitude. In the credits of the pacifist route, Burgerpants is seen participating in Mettaton's play.
Curiosities:
Mettaton's name appears to come from Metatron, an archangel in Judaism whose name is transliterated into Greek as MTT. This name has a double meaning with "automaton" (automaton), meaning a mechanical piece that imitates a human function. It also sounds similar to "metal", the material Mettaton is made of. His name could also literally be met a ton - meet many in English. Mettaton's blueprint can be seen in Alphys' room. It details how the soul of "Happstablook" is placed inside a heart-shaped container, which is then placed inside a metal body, after which illegible reading appears. The blueprint cannot be interacted with. Mettaton's high defense causes all attacks, even if they hit, to end in "miss". During the quiz show, one of the answers is "Snips & Snails," a reference to the English nursery rhyme "What Are Little Boys Made Of?" Another answer is "Sugar & Spice," a reference to a similar nursery rhyme about what little girls are made of. Mettaton NEO's weapon may be a reference to Megaman's weapon. During the musical performance that Mettaton performs for the protagonist, the name of the game window changes to "Undertale the Musical". In his EX form fight, if you use the "Mysterious Key" the text will say: "You use the mysterious key. Mettaton pretends not to see it." During the battle against Mettaton EX, depending on what you type in the Pop Quiz, different dialogues may pop up. For example, if you type "Toby" Mettaton will say the following: "What the hell is that? Sounds... Sexy." [2] Similarly, if responded to with an insult, Mettaton will become angry and say "Oh my! this is a family friendly TV show. Now stand still while I murder you". [3] This may be somewhat contradictory given Mettaton's tastes. In the same battle event, if you misspell English words, Mettaton will say "Nice. You get a gold star." Referring to an award often given to elementary school children. If you answer "his private part" he will still get angry and tell you the same thing.
