Personality

Johan is a very cheerful and calm boy, always willing to help those in need. He is also a true lover of Duels. It can also be seen that Johan is a little more serious than Judai. He has possessed the ability to communicate with Duel Spirits since he was a child. His spirit partner is "Crystal Beast Carbuncle Ruby", whom he affectionately nicknames "Ruby". Although Ruby is most often seen at his side, Johan considers all of his monsters part of his "family", because they selected him themselves. Also, he tends to say "Come out!" when Summoning his monsters during Duels, Johan states that his purpose for Duel is to play so that people believe in his Decks and have strong bonds with his cards. Apparently, he has become best friends with Judai Yuki, as he is noted to spend more and better time with Johan than with the rest of his friends. Johan is the fifth best Duelist in the world, just below Edo Phoenix and the three legendary Duelists (Yugi Muto, Seto Kaiba and Jounnichi), and the holder of the coveted Crystal Beast Cards. According to Pegasus Crawford, these cards were the ones that chose Johan. Like Judai, he can see and interact with Duel Monsters spirits. Having been invited by Principal Samejima along with the rest of the Ultramar Champions from around the world, Johan turns out to be the most secretive about his identity even to those he was traveling with. Although he did not board the ship that would take the champions to their final destination, Amon Garam deduces that this mysterious character will appear once they arrive at Duel Academy. Before the official public presentation at the opening ceremony of the new school year, he had already met Judai and the two became good friends due to discovering that they could both see the spirits of Duel Monsters.

Personality 2

However, Sho Marufuji and Tyranno Kenzan interrupted them before Johan had a chance to reveal his name. He arrives late to the opening ceremony, where he had already been classified as "absent", claiming that he had gone astray and apologising to Judai for not telling him his name. Judai doesn't seem to mind this detail and the two remain on good terms. He is chosen by Professor Cobra to Duel Judai in the first Exhibition Duel of the third year and the two are unknowingly equipped with Bio-Bands. When Johan is about to be defeated by Judai, he suddenly reveals the name of the most powerful Crystal Beast monster: "Rainbow Dragon". However, he later confesses that "Rainbow Dragon" has yet to become an Industrial Illusions card and that he wishes to find the Roman lithograph from which the concept of his Crystal Beast monsters is derived in order for Pegasus to finally create them. Since then, Jesse stays at Duel Academy along with Judai and his friends. Johan has been searching for a Duelist named Trapper, whose name is derived from the fact that he takes cards from the opponent after winning a Duel, and in it Johan Duels Trapper, who was searching for his Crystal Beast monsters, and defeats him. The reason for this search was that Trapper stole a card from a child that contained a Duel Spirit, and Johan promises the boy that he will get his card back. After being dragged into an alternate dimension, Johan and the rest of Duel Academy are contacted by Dr. Eisenstein, who tells them that the "Rainbow Dragon" lithograph has finally been found and that they would need it to escape that dimension. Securing the lithograph's excavation site, Pegasus finally creates the "Rainbow Dragon" card and sends it to the other world through a Duel Energy-powered wormhole that was opened in a battle between Johan and Ryou.

Personality 3

Johan summons "Rainbow Dragon" when Judai battles Martyn Kanou, only to learn that his true opponent is Yubel, the Duel Spirit who has taken control of Martyn Kanou. Johan uses "Rainbow Dragon" to save Judai and the others, while he remains in the alternate dimension to confront Yubel, prompting Judai and his friends to return through a rift between worlds to bring him back. After several setbacks, Johan reappears, but he was then possessed by Yubel and faces Ryou Marufuji in a Duel, which Ryou loses. After this duel, Johan-Yubel was exhausted and retreated to recover, telling Judai that he would be waiting for him. Johan then crosses a huge door to his throne where Amon Garam was waiting for him, whom he also faces in a Duel. After a tremendous Duel, Johan won again, feeding on the darkness of Eco, Amon's friend, to regain his strength and make Amon disappear. When Judai finally arrives at her domain, the two had a difficult Duel, in which it was revealed that the real Johan was trapped inside "Dark Rainbow Dragon" (the counterpart of the real "Rainbow Dragon"). In the end, Judai Fusion Summons his "Elemental HERO Neos" with "Dark Rainbow Dragon" to create "Rainbow Neos", freeing Johan from Yubel's control, who manages to turn the Duel into a draw. Before the final Duel against Yubel, Johan gives his Deck to Judai to help him out. Johan and everyone else returned to Duel Academy together, with the exception of Judai, Misawa, Ryou, and Amon. After a few months, Johan meets Judai in Domino City but the latter believes him to be Mr. T. Johan beats him in a Duel and the two return to Duel Academy where they find Yusuke Fujiwara, current wielder of Darkness, defeating Fubuki Tenjoin and challenge him to a Duel.

Personality 4

Fujiwara attempts to make Johan attack Judai as his enemy, revealing Johan's darkness (which is Judai), though Judai and Johan then start laughing and fight him as a team. Johan loses the Duel to Fujiwara, after sacrificing his last LP to save Judai, but Judai wins the Duel with "Rainbow Neos", the symbol of their friendship. Shortly after the Duel, Johan recovers and sees with Judai that Darkness has left Fujiwara's body. Johan is seen at the Duel Academy graduation with Judai's friends. Johan had a bad relationship with Judai's friend who is in love with him; Aya Bernandotte, a princess of Sweden, that was at first, because Aya was looking for a fight with him but, Johan did not say because he is a gentleman but, there was a moment when he got fed up and they spent their time arguing and then they became friends, although secretly, Johan is in love with her (only he was not going to admit his feelings for the young red-haired princess)
