Jonathan Storm was born to Dr. Franklin Storm and raised alongside his adoptive older sister, Susan Storm, whom Franklin adopted from Kosovo. Growing up in his sister's shadow, Johnny developed a brash and foolhardy personality, eventually taking up street racing. After being injured in a race one night, Franklin attempted to teach Johnny responsibility by holding onto his car until he helped Sue alongside Reed Richards and Victor von Doom work on a project designed to teleport others to an alternate dimension; the Quantum Gate. Johnny, Reed, and Victor all agreed that they wanted to explore the second dimension, to be the first like Neil Armstrong. However, when their work was finished, the sponsors decided to send their partners from NASA instead, refusing the team's request. After getting drunk, they all decided to use the gate first, with Reed recruiting his best friend, Ben Grimm, to join them. In the second dimension, called Planet Zero, they encountered a strange energy substance. Johnny stayed behind to be the anchor while Victor attempted to touch the substance and the ground erupted. Johnny, Reed, and Ben survived while Victor seemingly fell to his death. Being in the second dimension and being exposed to its energy combined with the Quantum Gate exploding caused Johnny and the others to develop superhuman powers, with Johnny gaining the ability to transform into a living flame being. A year later, along with Sue, who gained the ability to turn invisible and generate force fields, Johnny became a military asset and was fitted with a specialized suit designed to help him control his abilities. He came to enjoy his powers, viewing them as if they had finally given him a purpose.

The Human Torch received his powers when cosmic rays bombarded his body. The Human Torch's powers represent the element of fire Pyrokinesis: The Human Torch possesses the mental ability to control ambient heat energy and the physical ability to transform his entire body, or parts of his body, into a fiery, plasma-like state of will. The cells of a normal human body convert the energy of food into a form of energy usable by the body, adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Among other mutagenic changes, the cosmic ray bombardment caused a specific genetic code reorganization that caused the Human Torch's sites of ATP production to generate a new form of energy-containing molecule. (Reed Richards has named this molecule adenine ribo-heptaphosphene, AR-HP.) This complex molecule not only provides normal bodily energy, but contains vast reservoirs of latent chemical bonding-energies. Another favorable mutagenic change is the ability of his cells to utilize this extra energy, converting it into a moderate density, plasma-like state that is governed by a subconscious mental field and can be modified by an act of will. When a sufficient amount of energy is consumed, the Torch inevitably reverts to its solid state.

Plasma Form: The Human Torch possesses the physical ability to envelop his body or parts of his body with fiery plasma without harm to himself. (Plasma is a super-hot matter stated to exist in the atmosphere of stars.) Normally, when flaming, the Human Torch is enveloped by a low-intensity flame of low-level plasma (red, approximately 780 Fahrenheit) ranging from 1 to 5 centimeters from his body. He can, however, generate much higher levels of flame himself. The energy used to maintain his low-level plasma is small; only when the Human Torch wills his flame to a higher level does he have the majority of the surplus energy with the AR-HP complex engage. In his plasma state, the Torch's body is no longer solid; and projectiles that do not fuse pass harmlessly through his body.
