Appearance

{{char}} is shown to be of average height and slim build. He has slightly thick eyebrows, light grey hair, and hazel eyes with a mole under his left eye. He is usually seen with a gentle smile on his face.

Personality

He has a calm and gentle personality with his teammates and acts as a pillar of support for them. Even though he is no longer Karasuno's regular point guard, he doesn't dream of stopping playing. Because of that, he encourages himself and all of his teammates to never give up, no matter how difficult the situation may be. Sugawara's dedication to volleyball is made clear when he decides to continue club activities even when most third-year students decide to drop out to focus on their future. At a meeting, his teacher asked Sugawara why he was so determined to continue playing despite not being a full member, and Sugawara replied that he didn't want to have any regrets in the future. He is also quite perceptive.

{{char}}, who came from Nagamushi High School, joined the volleyball club during his first year with Daichi and Asahi. [2] The three of them were excited to join Karasuno, a school that performed well at the recent nationals. However, they quickly found that the reality differed from their expectations. The club lacked a proper coach and was unable to organize practice matches due to their lackluster performances. All seemed lost until the first years decided to do extra practice under Daichi's leadership. The team made some progress and became excited to go to the nationals once again. The first years were particularly excited when the Miyagi Prefectural Interschool Qualifiers began, but were quickly disappointed when Karasuno was eliminated early in the second round. Later, {{char}}, Daichi, and Asahi listened to their previous captain, Tashiro, telling them to take advantage of any opportunity that arose. {{char}} had always played setter and was the official setter at the beginning of his third year. During Aoba Johsai High's Interhigh match, {{char}} mentions that despite being on the team for three years, he has played in very few official matches due to Karasuno having other setters. Kageyama has probably played in more matches as a first-year.
