For the Netflix adaptation, see here David Kostyuk/Netflix. David Kostyk - strongman and member of the Grisha Triumvirate Story Shadow and Bone David first appears when Zhenya Safina takes Alina Starkova to the workshop to retrieve her glass disks. He either doesn't know at this time that Zhenya is in love, or simply isn't interested in the topic, as he ignores her presence. David was an experienced Substantial, so the Darkling used him to create a collar for Alina from the antlers of Morozov's Deer. Later, David admitted that he felt bad about creating the collar, and Alina asked Zhenya to tell him that she did not hold a grudge against him. Storm and StormWhen Alina Starkova returned to the Little Palace, David mostly ignored her, feeling extremely guilty about what he had done with Morozov's Collar. Alina cornered him in the workshop and he told her about his idea with the large plates. David and Nikolai Lantsov worked together on the plates and repairing the Hummingbird. Later, Alina cornered him again and asked about Morozova's journals. During the Darkling's attack, he tried to use the remaining plate, but it did not work. When the Darkling revealed Zhenya, David rushed to her and they went to the White Cathedral with the other Grisha. Crash and Rise When Alina was stuck in the White Cathedral, he created an ointment to help heal Zhenya's wounds, and also searched Ilya Morozov's Diaries in hopes of finding any clues that would lead the dozen living Grisha and their company to the Firebird.

Every morning at the White Cathedral, he also assisted Apprat in his morning prayer ceremonies, controlling the flames of the Inferns with a small disk made from salvaged glass. Unlike Zhenya, David was present at the final battle in the Canyon. Personality He was a rather quiet Prochnik who enjoyed using his Grisha abilities to manipulate metal, and seemed oblivious to anything else. Adult David was also described as a modest man with a gentle, calm, yet absent-minded personality. Appearance David was described as pale, thin as a reed, with long brown hair falling over his eyes.Relationships Zhenya Safina David's relationship with Zhenya began mostly after she received her scars. The two were seen as a couple in Ruin and Rising, constantly chatting about metals, melting points, and poison as their group headed to the Firebird's location. Sometime in Ruin and Rising, they were seen in bed together after David kicked everyone out of the dorm to spend time with Zhenya. The two are later interrupted when Alina tells David to "get dressed."Zhenya Safina Nicknames The First Dressmaker, Crushed Age 19 (in Shadow and Bone)Relationships David Kostyuk (husband) Physical information Floor female Hair color ginger Eye color amber Affiliation Nationality Ravka Profession Member of the Grisha Triumvirate, The Queen's Tailor (formerly) Organization Second ArmyOrder of Grisha Corporalities Type TailorsBiography Early life Zhenya has not seen her parents since she was 5 years old. Due to her specialty as a Tailor, the Darkling gave her to the Queen at a young age, making her a servant. Since she began living in the Grand Palace, she had some privileges and for this, the other Grisha treated her poorly. Zhenya was often abused by the King, starting from an unknown time. Shadow and Bone

At the request of the Darkling, she helps Alina Starkova prepare for her meeting with the King while she is in the Little Palace. Using items such as rose petals and gold, she is able to change Alina's face and hair. Zhenya then brings Alina to the Court and asks that she not tell anyone how she helped change her appearance. Zhenya is apparently not allowed to work with any Grisha due to the Queen's orders. It is obvious that the Queen is jealous of Zhenya's beauty, but since the latter is a servant, she can do nothing about it. The Darkling later explains that Zhenya could have chosen to be a Fabricator or a Corporal, but he chose to develop her gift and give her a "gift" to the Queen. Because of this, Zhenya is considered the Queen's favorite and a lower-level Grisha. The next day, Zhenya takes Alina on a tour of the Small Palace, including the Darkling's library. As they head to the Fabricators' workshops, two girls pick up some glass disks for Alina. The man who made the disks is David Kostik, whom Zhenya is clearly in love with. When Alina escapes, she has no time to tell Genya that she is leaving, which may have been for the best, as it turns out that the Tailor is on the Darkling's side, feeling that she has nowhere else to turn. After her capture, Alina learned that the King is mysteriously ill and that the Queen is not seeing anyone for fear of becoming ill herself. This news, coupled with the fact that Genya no longer wears a servant's kefta, makes it obvious that she has been working with the Darkling all this time, which is why it was given to the Queen as a gift so long ago. Even though she knows that Zhenya is on the Darkling's side, Alina cannot bring herself to hurt her and tells Zhenya that she forgives both her and David. Assault and Storm When Alina is captured by the Darkling, she is cared for by Zhenya, who still wears the red caftan, a symbol of her betrayal. However, when Sturmhond rescues Alina, Zhenya has the chance to shoot Alina. She is unable to do so. Alina urges Zhenya to come with them.

and remains. Near the end of the book, when the Darkling finds Alina, we learn that the Darkling set the Nizhnyaya on Zhenya because she spared Alina. Her skin is scarred and she only has one eye left. David runs to her, and she, without a word, crosses over to the other side. Crash and Rise Zhenya is in the White Cathedral with the remaining Grisha. She often meets with Alina to change her and help her with her powers. Because of her scars, she was given the name Razrusha'ya, which means "Crushed". When Zhenya was first attacked, she refused to be near anyone, as they thought she was a curse. Later, she and the other Grisha leave the White Cathedral and go to the surface. When they are saved by Nikolai Lantsov, he does not recognize her. Substantials Edit Materials symbol The Substantials, or the Order of Fabricators (Materialki), are Grisha whose power is focused on combining materials such as metal, glass, textiles, and chemicals. This order is made up of Prochniks and Alchems. Although looked down upon by both the Corporal and Ethereals during the Darkling's reign, the Substantials have created many innovations that are used for a variety of purposes in Ravka and internationally. Examples include Substantial cloth, an exceptionally strong and flexible fabric that can withstand bullets; Grisha steel; Substantial glass; blasting powders; lumia, a form of liquid fire; and a number of other inventions. In the Second Army, the Substantials wear purple caftans. They are represented by David Kostik in the Grisha Triumvirate. Following the events of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Corporalians are led and represented by Zhenya Safina in Grisha's triumvirate. Under the Triumvirate's leadership, all Corporalians began to learn the craft of tailoring, making the classification

which makes the classification of tailors practically obsolete, except for Zhenya. Ravkan Corporals Corporalians are considered the most valuable soldiers in the Second Army, making them the highest rank of the Grisha orders under the Darkling. At the Little Palace, all Corporalians spend their first two years of training in general training before branching out to become either Heartrenders or Healers, depending on each individual's choice.

For the Netflix adaptation, see Darkling/Netflix. "I will take from you everything you know, everything you love, until you have no other refuge but me!" — The Darkling. "Ruin and Rising" The Darkling is a mysterious, beautiful Grisha, the leader of the Second Army. His real name is Alexander Morozov. Advertisement Appearance The Darkling is described as a tall, handsome young man, appearing not much older than Alina, despite his true age being approximately six-plus centuries. He has dark hair, quartz eyes, and sharp, handsome features. Personality The Darkling is later revealed to be an extremely dark and manipulative individual. He was power hungry and attempted to create his own amplifiers, which resulted in the creation of the Fold, where his powers were rendered useless. He later sought to use the Fold against his enemies, but in the process created the Volcra, who prevented him from expanding it. He is ambitious, proud, and domineering. He loves Ravka and wants the Grisha to be free of slavery and oppression, and planned to use the Fold as leverage against the very people who had been killing and burning Grisha for centuries, not just his own enemies. He was obsessed with Alina because she was like him: the only one of her kind who could share his loneliness and eternity. Story The Darkling was born m

The Darkling was born many centuries ago, and his age has never been stated; he told Alina that he is around 120 years old, claiming to be the great-great-great-grandson of the Black Heretic. He is undoubtedly over 400 years old, as this was around the time of the creation of the Shadow Fold. He is the son of Baghra and an unknown Heartrender. His mother was the one who raised him, giving him ambition and pride. The Darkling's greed led to the creation of the Shadow Fold, during the period when he was known as the Black Heretic. Over the years, the Darkling served many kings and faked his death many times. He planned to expand the Fold and gain control of Ravka, but he needed the Sun Summoner to restrain the Volcra and carry out his plans. Shadow and Bone Alina Starkova was brought before the Darkling after a failed attempt to cross the Shadow Fold, resulting in a mysterious light saving her and her friend Malen Oretsev. After witnesses reported what they had seen on the skiff, the Darkling did not believe that Alina was the Sun Summoner and decided to test her. Enveloping the room in darkness, he attempted to call upon the magic within her, but she actively resisted. Rather than fall for her trick, the Darkling decided to use physical force, cutting her arm with a knife, and the pain caused a response in Alina: a blinding white light that destroyed the darkness he had summoned.

It is later revealed that the Darkling is also a living amplifier, a person who can increase Grisha's powers. There are also inanimate objects that are used as amplifiers, but only the Darkling's most beloved Grisha can have them. In the palace, the Darkling barely interacted with Alina, but one day he appeared in Baghra's hut and told Alina that he might be able to get her the most powerful amplifier. After Alina finally accepted her powers, the Darkling visited her again during her training. He still had not found the stag whose antlers he had promised her, but asked her to have faith in him and kissed her, surprising them both. After the King and Queen's winter feast, Alina learned that Baghra was the Darkling's mother, that he was the black heretic who created the Shadow Fold, and that his plan was to use Alina to fight off the volcra that were preventing him from using the Fold. When he captured Alina and Mal after they escaped, he used deer antlers to bind her to him, and then revealed that he planned to kill Mal with the volcra. He used Alina's power to demonstrate his power over the Fold, and easily scared the ambassadors and messengers who came to the demonstration into submission. When he ordered Mal thrown overboard, Alina broke free of his control and left the people on the ship to fend off the volcra. By the end of the book, it was unknown if the Darkling had survived the volcra attack, but he had lived so long that he would not have been easily killed.

Following the escape of Alina Starkov and Malen Oretsev, the Darkling works tirelessly to capture them. A trail of payments Alina made using her golden hairpins leads the Darkling to them. He discovers that the couple have fled to Novyi Zem and taken up residence in a boarding house using one of the remaining hairpins. When Alina and Mal return to their home, they find the Darkling casually sitting on a rickety chair as if he were royalty himself; surrounded by his supporters, who appear terrified of his presence. He orders Ivan to hold Mal hostage as he repeatedly expresses his "gratitude" to Alina for helping him further expand his power. However, surviving the Fold has come at a cost. The Darkling now bears volcra scars on his face as a reminder of the origin of his new power, and Alina notices that when the Darkling uses his power, it seems to feed off of him, wreaking havoc on his physical health. He reveals to Alina that his ability to manipulate darkness has evolved into manifesting abominations/volcra-like creatures that cannot be destroyed by light (except by cutting). The Darkling then brings Mal and Alina aboard the Verrader, a stolen ship belonging to a notorious pirate named Sturmhond. Crash and Rise After Alina and the other Grisha are "captured" by the Apparat and left underground in the White Cathedral, the Darkling rules Ravka on the surface. Alina visits the Darkling through the bond they developed, and he misleads her by claiming he is going to stage an attack on West Ravka. Alina tells Nikolai and the twelve Grisha she was traveling with. Just as Alina and Nikolai are about to leave, the Darkling attacks them. In retaliation for Nikolai stealing Alina, the Darkling fills his lungs with the blight, which transforms him into a volcra-like creature. After his mother's death, he calls out to Alina using the shared tether, but she refuses to answer. He later destroys Keramzin, killing

Grisha instructors, Botkin and Anu Kuya and shows Alina their corpses hanging from an oak tree. His last appearance is at the end of the story, in the battle at the Shadow Canyon. He gets into a fight with Alina, but when she loses her powers, he appears upset. Alina uses this distraction to stab him in the chest with Grisha's steel dagger. Afterwards, they share a final moment together, where he asks Alina to burn his corpse because he did not want his grave to be desecrated. His corpse is burned at the end of the story, along with Ruby's corpse, which was disguised as Alina's by Zhenya. The Little Palace is the seat of the Second Army of Ravka. It is located near the Grand Palace in Ravka's capital, Os Alta. Advertisement Assault and Storm Following the Darkling's attempted coup and escape, the Little Palace is captured by the First Army, with armed soldiers guarding its perimeter to prevent the few remaining Grisha from escaping. The palace was partially destroyed during the Darkling's attack on Os Alta.
