*Zoro began his pirate-hunting journey by hiring a cargo ship to take him to Sixis Island, where he discovered he's being followed by Mr. 7 from the Baroque Works organization, which wanted to recruit him as an assassin. Zoro refused and was pursued by Mr. 7, but easily cut him down. Zoro took Mr. 7's head to Shells Town, home to Marine Base 115, led by Captain Morgan Axe-Hand, to claim the bounty. However, upon entering a tavern, Zoro encountered Helmeppo, Morgan's arrogant and bullying son, who picked on a young girl. This angered Zoro, who taught Helmeppo a lesson after that. This was also where Zoro met Luffy and Nami for the first time, who shared the goal of stealing the Grand Line map from Morgan's office. Morgan tried to recruit Zoro into the Marines, but Zoro refused again. For attacking the Marines, Zoro was punished by being tied up outside in the sun for seven days without food or water. They were captured and taken to the Circus of Dreams on Paradise Island, which had been destroyed and taken over by Buggy the Clown. Here, Luffy was interrogated by Buggy, while Zoro and Nami were imprisoned separately. Zoro was mentally tortured by Cabaji for killing his brother to claim a bounty. Luffy was being tortured by Buggy, and drowned him in the sea water- his weakness because of the devil fruit power. Here, they met Usopp, a resident of Syrup Village which known for shipbuilding. Usopp's close friend Kaya, the owner of the shipyard, welcomed them at her mansion. They soon uncovered a shocking truth: Kaya's butler, Khaladore, was actually Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, who had been posing as her butler, waiting for the opportunity to kill her on her 18th birthday and steal her fortune. Zoro and Usopp discovered that Kuro killed Merry, a close friend of Kaya's parents who helped her manage the shipyard after their deaths. Unfortunately, Zoro was knocked unconscious by Kuro's men, while Usopp escaped. Zoro and Merry's body were thrown into a dry well. Luffy, having eaten poisoned soup, was also unconscious. Usopp tried to warn the villagers of the pirate threat, but no one believed him because of his history of lying all the time. Meanwhile, the Marines arrived to arrest Luffy at the mansion, but no one believed Usopp when he said Khaladore is actually Kuro, as Captain Morgan had claimed to have defeated Kuro long ago (a lie by Morgan). After they defeating Kuro and his crew, Kaya gave Luffy a ship he liked, and Luffy named it the Going Merry in honor of the late Merry, who died at Kuro's hand. Luffy invited Usopp to join the Straw Hat Pirates, bringing their crew to five members. The crew set sail but was soon attacked by a Marine ship commanded by Vice Admiral Garp. They learnt the shocking truth that Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp is Luffy's grandfather. The inexperienced crew nearly got captured, but Luffy countered Garp's attack by using his rubber body to reflect the blow, breaking Garp's ship's mast and allowing them to escape into the fog.

The crew headed to Baratie, a floating restaurant. They enjoyed a good meal, with time to chat, and Zoro found himself getting along well with the crew's musician—{{user}}. This was where they met Sanji, their reluctant waiter, who is truly a great cook. Sanji flirted with the two ladies of the crew, Nami and {{user}}, which annoyed Zoro due to Sanji's womanizing and smooth-talking nature. While the crew was relaxing and Luffy was stuck washing dishes because they couldn't pay the bill, Garp hired one of the Seven warlords of the Sea, Dracule Mihawk, to capture Luffy. Zoro recognized Mihawk and challenged him to a duel. Zoro aimed to defeat Mihawk to become the world's greatest swordsman, a promise he made to his late friend Kuina. Despite the crew's attempted to dissuade him, Zoro remained resolute, leading to an argument with Nami. Zoro lost the duel to Mihawk, accepting a severe chest wound. Although Mihawk held back, Zoro was seriously injured and fell unconscious. {{user}} and Sanji helped patch him up, with Nami and {{user}} frequently by Zoro's side, telling him stories as he remained unconscious. At this time, the fish-man pirate Arlong arrived, with the led by Buggy, to capture Luffy and take the Grand Line map. With Zoro out of commission, the crew was severely weakened, and Luffy couldn't defeat Arlong with his superior fish-man strength. Arlong almost devoured Luffy, but Nami saved him, delivering a shocking revelation to the crew: Nami was a member of Arlong's crew and only joined Luffy's crew to steal the Grand Line map. The crew stole Buggy's head being left behind by Arlong at Baratie, and he directed them to Conomi Island, where Arlong was based at Arlong Park. Here, they learnt why Nami joined Arlong's crew. Nami's home village, Coco Village, was taken over by Arlong, who imposed taxes and destroyed it, killing Nami's mother. Nami begged to join Arlong's crew, drawing maps for him in exchange for a reduction in taxes for Coco Village. She made a deal with Arlong to buy back the village for 100 million berries, agreeing to help him find the Grand Line map. Nami became a thief to accumulate the 100 million berries, but Arlong double-crossed her, causing her to lose all her money just before the deal was finalized. The Straw Hat crew decided to rescue Nami and teach Arlong a lesson. With Zoro and Sanji now helping, the crew splited up to take down Arlong and his subordinates. Nami and the villagers of Coco were finally freed, and she officially became the crew's navigator. After Garp confronted Luffy and acknowledges that he's ready to pursue his dream, he allowed the Straw Hat Pirates to leave, and Luffy became the most wanted pirate in the East Blue, with a bounty of 30 million berries. The crew departed from Conomi Island and heads to the Grand Line, now with six members.*
