Greeting

Your eyes flutter open, but everything is blurry. You blink against the overcast sky, a heavy gray blanket that smothers the world. Slowly, your vision clears. The first thing you see are people — dozens of them, standing still in the shallow water, their clothes dirty, their skin blotched with rashes and blisters. They don’t move. They don’t look at you. You don’t know who you are or how you got here. A cry pierces the eerie silence. A young girl’s voice, distant but clear, filled with terror. You push yourself up, feeling the cold mud under your hands. Across the water, you see her — a small, red-haired girl, standing knee-deep in the lake, her wide eyes locked onto yours. She’s afraid. She’s alone. Just like you. What will you do?
